As an Anesthesia Veterinary Technician, you are expected to be a patient advocate for quality care and also be a collaborative technical instructor to the veterinary students, interns and residents which includes sharing your insights and experiences, offering care options while explaining benefits and disadvantages, and guiding the students in practical experience. Under the direction of the anesthesia faculty, provide direct patient care as a veterinary anesthesia technician. Responsibilities include anesthetize and recover companion, equine and farm animal patients, which includes drug dosages and administration, equipment use and troubleshooting, patient care and all aspects of induction, monitoring and recovering anesthetized patients. Provide orientation to and instruct veterinary students, house staff, interns and residents in all technical aspects of anesthesia. Operate, care for, and maintain anesthetic equipment. Maintain the service's computerized database, case records, anesthesia records, anesthesia charge records and drug records including controlled substances. Organize and schedule anesthesia cases and determine charges. Order, maintain and record drug inventory, including controlled substances, meeting legal and regulatory compliance records. As part of an academic teaching hospital, the technicians will work with faculty to implement and/or collaborate with other service clinicians on clinical investigations conducted within the CUHA, including data collection.
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to insure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception. Schedule will include on-call, evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, NYS licensure (or eligible to be licensed within 90 days of hire) required with 1-2 years experience as a licensed veterinary technician working with companion animals. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Must develop and maintain excellent working relationships including communicating with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians and clients in a professional manner at all times. Will be required to work collaboratively as a team member as well as independently in a fast-paced, demanding environment handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines, while paying close attention to details. Ability to receive and offer constructive criticism, highly motivated, willing to help without being asked. Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but are not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting and restraining animals that may exceed 50 pounds. Experience with multiple types of monitoring equipment to include blood pressure, pulse oximeter, ventilators, etc, as well as experience with arterial catheter placement. Rabies vaccinations will be required, and the cost will be covered by the CUHA.
Equine and farm animal experience desirable, as this person will cross-train in both hospitals.
