General DescriptionThe Johns Hopkins University School of Education has created a Master of Science in Education degree for teachers in the alternate certification programs of TFA and TNTP. This program seeks to merge university learning with the real-time experience of teaching, with a focus on transformational teaching. We are seeking qualified applicants to serve as portfolio coaches.
The full portfolio is built over two semesters and it includes the following:
Portfolio Development, Part 1: Teacher Growth
- Framework (template design and context about the candidate and classroom)
- Assessment (InTASC Standard 6)
- Planning for Instruction (InTASC Standard 7)
- Instructional Strategies (InTASC Standard 8)
Portfolio Development, Part 2: Student Growth
- Transformational Teaching Paradigm Outcomes
- Habits and Mindsets
- Dramatic Academic Growth
You should expect to devote 5-10 hours per week to the role.
Portfolio Coaches are assigned per semester, based on enrollment.
Portfolio Coaches guide approximately 10 candidates through the building and refining of their digital portfolios. Coaches maintain regular contact with candidates and provide support. Coaches review drafts of the portfolio submitted by candidates and give critical feedback and guidance for revisions to bring interpretations and evidence into alignment with the portfolio rubric. Candidates have one coach for Part 1 and a different coach for Part 2.
At the end of the process, Coaches complete the final scoring for candidates in their coaching group as well as the candidates in a second coaching group. At the time of final scoring, each portfolio is assessed twice, by two different portfolio coaches, to ensure consistency and alignment to the portfolio rubric and expectations.
This graduate program is fully online. The portfolio course is hosted in Blackboard. With rare exceptions, all interactions are over email, phone, or virtual conferencing tools. This position will require a SIGNIFICANT degree of confidence with technology. There is an expectation for self-motivated familiarity with the associated online tools.
General Overview of Responsibilities:
Planning and Execution:
- Coach approximately 10 candidates throughout the semester as they build half of the portfolio. Give specific guidance and support. Build relationships with the candidates in your coaching group. Provide timely, thorough, and thoughtful feedback on portfolio drafts, so that candidates know what revisions are necessary to demonstrate proficiency according to the portfolio rubric.
- Complete scoring for the final portfolios submitted in your coaching group as well as another assigned set of candidates. At the time of final scoring, each portfolio is assessed twice, by two different portfolio coaches, to ensure consistency and alignment to the portfolio rubric and expectations.
- Candidates are held to a tight submission schedule throughout the semester, and coaches are expected to meet similar standards of responsiveness in reviewing and returning feedback.
- Coaches are expected to track and report daily hours worked throughout the duration of the contract.
- Email/call/connect via online collaboration tools with candidates regularly.
- Communicate regularly with the Lead Coach.
- Expected response time to emails is no more than 48 hours.
- Report directly to and receive feedback from the Lead Coach.
- Thoroughly acquaint yourself with the Portfolio Course in Blackboard, including all rubrics and course tools.
- Thoroughly acquaint yourself with the Coaches' Site in Blackboard, a separate Blackboard organization for the professional development and management of the coaching process. Regularly check in on the site for announcements and updates.
- Participate actively in ongoing professional development, norming, and training sessions throughout the semester.
