ABOUT THIS POSITION
This position is housed in both Blue Earth and Le Sueur County offices. This Extension Educator will focus on providing support for AFNR (Extension Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources) programs that are relevant to the local community. This support will involve local program development, delivery, marketing, evaluation, coordination of logistics and participation in scholarly research. Emphasis for programming around crop production systems and related business issues is a priority. This position will also be responsible for determining local needs assessments involving AFNR programs and will provide technical assistance and information in the area of crops, livestock, agricultural business management, and horticulture, as well as, oversight of the Master Gardener program. Special effort will be required to maintain competency in multiple discipline areas of agricultural production as well as knowledge of local/federal/state agency programs.
This position is accountable to the Area Program Leader for Local Positions in AFNR for program direction, performance evaluation and personnel actions in her/his supervisory role.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
*Develop and manage local AFE programs based on local needs and expectations.
*Provide technical assistance and information in the areas of crops, livestock, agriculture business management, and horticulture based on local needs and expectations.
*Develop and maintain effective regional, university and state partnerships that further the development and delivery of Extension AFE educational programs.
*Design, develop, deliver/implement and evaluate educational programs based in scholarly/scientific theory and research, and appropriate to the local audience.
*Establish an on-going communication network and plan to reach audiences and stakeholders via multiple platforms, including technology-based mediums.
*Utilize and maintain local media and other delivery methods – such as newsletters, email, etc. - to promote programs, educate the public about agriculture and assess community needs.
*Use technology for program design, program delivery, reporting, communication, trend monitoring, and locating information.
*Work in partnership with NRCS, SWCD, FSA, County Planning & Zoning, Environmental Services, Commodity groups and agricultural professional organizations to provide educational programs relevant to the county.
*Provide oversight for the Master Gardener program which includes, managing recruitment, communications, program planning, financial management, and ensuring their work focuses on education of others and aligns with state program focus and needs, as well as, county needs.
*Foster and contribute to a positive work climate with colleagues, advisory groups, audiences and partnerships. Collaborate and support Extension programs in 4-H, and Food & Nutrition as a member of the county team.
*Garner funds and resources, as necessary, to support local educational programs through grants and other means.
*Conduct scholarly research in collaboration with University faculty where appropriate to county program efforts.
*Continue professional development in scholarship, program development and delivery via conferences, additional graduate work, self-directed study and other appropriate means of maintaining a high level of expertise.
*Ensure that Extension programs, facilities, committees, and employment opportunities are accessible to new, diverse, and historically underserved audiences.
*Participate and succeed in progress regarding your professional performance including the systems of annual performance review, professional plan of work and promotion.
*Make contributions to the whichever of the seven internal promotion criteria are relevant for the position and its specific responsibilities, program leadership, extension teaching, program management, scholarship, technical assistance, engagement and/or service.
1. The Extension Educator position has an annual University academic professional appointment. Renewal is dependent on local funding, program need, performance, and results.

3. Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy. (Must provide own means for traveling throughout the state and legally required vehicle insurance.)
