Purpose of Position:
This is a 9-month full-time term faculty position with primary teaching responsibilities in the fashion merchandising track in the Department of Fashion Design & Merchandising. This position is expected to be a creative leader and have the ability to teach across both the merchandising and design tracks and to facilitate circular bridges between the two tracks. The candidate will have mastered strong skills in the areas of fashion merchandising and design as well as concept development and innovation and have a passion for mentoring an enthusiastic and diverse student body. Contributing to new knowledge in the fashion industry or a related discipline through research and/or creative work is an expectation. The candidate must possess the intelligence, flexibility, creativity, strong attention to detail, and sense of humor to handle this fast-paced environment.
The faculty member will have undergraduate teaching responsibilities primarily in fashion merchandising with the capability to cross over to fashion design. Courses may include but are not limited to survey of the fashion industry, buying, product development, import/export, new boutique store development, fashion branding, fashion history, textiles, fashion forecasting, entrepreneurship as well as a working knowledge in the area of luxury brands and fast fashion. Examples of fashion design coursework include illustration, computers for fashion, pattern-drafting, draping and construction, menswear design and construction, knitwear design, and collection development. Keeping coursework current and relevant and participating in ongoing curriculum development is expected. Course taught may change as demand requires and will be at the discretion of the Chair.
The faculty member's scholarly and creative activity should make a contribution to the body of knowledge within the discipline of fashion merchandising and/or design and reflect a high standard of quality. Working with the department Chair, she/he must establish a scholarly research agenda that could include paper presentations at conferences, exhibiting creative work as well as identifying external sources of funding, as appropriate. She/he must consistently demonstrate an active professional career and aspire to be recognized at a national and/or international level. Areas of research interest and/or creative expression should include the fashion industry and/or related areas.
The faculty member will be expected to serve on departmental, school, and/or university committees as needed and agreed upon with the department chair as outlined in each annual individual work plan. Other opportunities for service to the profession exist, e.g., reviewer of papers for conference presentation and/or publication, serving as a consultant, a critic, a judge for competitions, a conference organizer, and serving on a panel to a professional organization.
Mentoring students for internships and career placement; recruitment at Open Houses, Preview Days and National Portfolio Days; faculty representative on student field trips; alumni engagement; donor cultivation; networking with the NY Fashion Advisory Board, and a visiting lecturer at another school.
Required Qualifications:Master's degree preferred, or professional, high-level fashion industry experience and training that equates to a graduate degree;
Significant professional/industry executive experience exceeding eight years in lieu of advanced degree;
Demonstrable interest in developing productive connections across fashion merchandising and design disciplines;
Ability to maintain and build upon current connections to the fashion industry and its professionals, and use these connections to create opportunities for students and to elevate the profile of the department;
Intermediate skills in Excel and presentation software, and adept at speaking to large audiences;
Familiarity with latest technology used in the fashion industry;
Exceptional communication skills, written, oral and interpersonal;
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:University level teaching experience;
A developed research agenda;
Comfortable using social media;
International experiences that bring an understanding of other cultures to the classroom.
