To code Mandarin, Cantonese and English recordings of medical visits using the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS) and assist in activities related to data analysis and curriculum development. May also be asked to assist in administrative and research duties.
Primary duties and responsibilities
The Coder will be responsible, after training in the use of RIAS and RIAS coding software, for applying the RIAS to audio-recordings of medical visits conducted in Mandarin, Cantonese or English and for visits in which a translator assisted the patient and physician with communication during the medical visit. Coding is applied directly to study visit recordings, without transcription, and entered into a database using the RIAS software. A coder must be proficient in English, Mandarin and/or Cantonese, exhibit a thorough understanding and knowledge of the RIAS categories of analysis after training, and must demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Additional activities relate to data management and quality assurance. Coders will be directly responsible to Dr. Debra Roter and the Project Director who will supervise coding quality and accuracy through periodic meetings.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Bachelor's degree preferably in the social sciences, linguistics or communication.
Expert proficiency in Cantonese and Mandarin language; bilingual or high fluency; basic computer skills and familiarity with use of analytic packages such as EXCEL, ACCESS, STATA SPSS or R; experience in video editing desirable. Interest and experience in working with students and assisting in research and administrative tasks are also valued.
