The Department of Sociology at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for an Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer position (fixed-term, one-year, non-tenure-track) starting in Fall 2017. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of seven (7) quarter-long courses over the year, with at least one course in each quarter, fall, winter and spring. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week set for final examinations.
Salary: Salary range: $54,810-$58,170 depending on teaching experience; benefits eligible.
(1) PhD or ABD in Sociology [or a closely related field if the candidate also has a high level of practice/applied work experience directly pertinent to the core themes of the courses.] (2) Demonstrated excellence in teaching sociology at the college level; (3) Demonstrated expertise in the specific topics covered in the courses; (4) Excellent communication skills.
Faculty responsibilities include (1) teaching and (2) service, as specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook (sec. 3.6). Duties include but are not limited to:1. Planning and teaching courses selected from among: Principles of Sociology (SOCI 1), Self, Community & Society (SOCI 30), Social Problems in the U.S. (SOCI 33), Research Design and Methods (SOCI 35), Applied Capstone (SOCI 122), Social Stratification (SOCI 132), Business, Technology & Society (SOCI 149), Collective Behavior (SOCI 164), Human Services (SOCI 165), Management of Health Care Organizations (SOCI 172), Race and Inequality (SOCI 175), or other course assignments according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need. Courses that are part of the Core curriculum must be taught using an approved syllabus or from a syllabus that has been approved by the appropriate University Faculty Core Committee.Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses including:
a. Developing syllabi, assignments, readings, and course schedule before the course begins; developing appropriate teaching preparations for each class meeting; selecting course materials and ordering books; conducting and appearing on-time for all scheduled class meetings;
b. Using appropriate measures of student performance, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work; Submitting course grades to the Office of the Registrar by quarterly deadlines;
c. Posting and maintaining regular office hours at times reasonably convenient for students;
d. Demonstrating a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively;
e. Administer numerical and narrative course evaluations to each class as assigned by the chair.
f. Serving as an advisor to assigned students providing informed advice;
g. Developing courses for which they are responsible and contribute to general curriculum development.
h. Fulfilling other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.2. Service at the department, College, and University levels including: attending faculty meetings or other appropriate department gatherings and participating constructively; serving on committees; participating in student recruitment and retention activities as deemed appropriate by the department chair or department culture; participating in professional organizations and activities; and performing community service in virtue of their professional expertise and association with the University.
