Involves a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department / school / college or organization. Provides assistance to the dean / chair, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, the evaluation and awarding of fellowships and block grant funds, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs.
Using skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, provides the full range of student services for students pursuing M.A. and Ph.D. degrees within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Under general direction of the department manager, the incumbent independently manages the department's graduate program including the coordination of programmatic activities and administration oversight. The primary functional areas of this position include: (1) student advising; (2) program planning, analysis, and administration; (3) academic student employment (ASE titles), and training; (4) graduate student recruitment, admissions, and orientation; and (5) graduate program budget management. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, such as the graduate division, and by the chair and faculty of the department.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, located in the Physical Sciences Building, is a dynamic group comprised of instructional and research units and a variety of support programs and facilities with staff committed to providing excellent service to students, faculty and researchers. Our Departmental intellectual strengths include very collegial and high quality faculty, vibrant research on the forefront of science, expanding research facilities, and the integration of both graduate and undergraduate education into our research endeavors. The department consists of 22 ladder rank faculty, 2 continuing lecturers, researchers, post-docs and administrative support staff. Departmental resources for operations and research are among the highest in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. The department has up to 100 graduate students working towards Ph.D. and Masters degrees. The department is closely aligned with the research and faculty in Molecular, Cell and Development Biology, Environmental Toxicology and the School of Engineering, with interdisciplinary programs in PBSE (Program in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering) (graduate).
Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
Ability in problem identification and reasoning.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
