The Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network (PNSN), in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist Engineer 2 to troubleshoot, repair, construct, install, test and maintain seismic instruments and data telemetry systems. The PNSN operates seismographs at more than 300 sites in Washington and Oregon. Data from these instruments are collected at the University of Washington via real-time telemetry and are used to monitor earthquake activity. The staff of the PNSN consists of seismologists, data analysts, field technicians and computer support personnel.
This position oversees, under supervision of PNSN management, the design, maintenance and upgrading of PNSN's digital seismographs and related telemetry. We value the capacity to work with a minimum of direct supervision and independently but in a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team, both in the lab and the field. The position involves coordinating with scientific colleagues throughout the US to define and employ best practice, and to communicate PNSN innovations. Work sites will range from our electronics shop at the University to off campus locations in Washington and Oregon. Although most work will be in the Puget Sound region, some overnight travel may be necessary.
Under supervision of Research Scientist or Engineer, and Seismologist:
Diagnoses problems, repairs and calibrates amplifier/VCOs, discriminators, seismic recorders and displays.
Builds and or repairs interconnecting cables, connectors and enclosures.
Builds and assembles masts, wiring and mounting hardware for antennas and solar panels.
Builds and repairs electronic interface devices such as summing amps, power regulators, noise filters from design documents.
Maintains accurate records of remote field site maintenance visits, instrument condition and inventory via written and computer entry system.
Repairs and calibrates or send for factory repair specialized lab test equipment

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or geophysics, and a minimum of two years experience as an electronic technician OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with both analog and digital radio. Should be experienced at maintaining single channel VHF FM radios, operating digital spread-spectrum data telemetry systems, and CDMA telemetry.
Off-road driving experience.
Excellent communication skills.
Proven ability to work well both autonomously and in team-oriented group.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Knowledge of and experience with computerized databases.
Experience using computers with Unix/Solaris and Linux operating systems.
Experience with seismic or related data acquisition systems.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must be able to operate a state vehicle on a daily basis, which requires a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Washington.
