Under a Cooperative Agreement between the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the University of California, Santa Cruz, comprehensive studies are being conducted on the bio-economics and ecology of Pacific coast salmon species. The primary purpose of these studies is to provide critical information in support of conservation and management of threatened and endangered species. The research team conducting laboratory and field studies consists of UCSC staff, faculty, and students, and collaborative researchers from the NMFS Santa Cruz Laboratory. Actual fieldwork is conducted in streams, rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters of Central and Northern California. Results from this program are intended to benefit resource (e.g., Pacific Fisheries Management Council) and fisheries and resource science in general.
Under general supervision of the Associate Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences, the incumbent will serve as a member of a research team investigating the general distribution and abundance of salmonids listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The incumbent will primarily participate in activities related to the daily care and husbandry of coho salmon captive broodstock populations rearing at the NMFS Santa Cruz Laboratory. Work will also include database management and analysis of samples collected in the field.
Knowledge such as attained in lower division coursework leading to a Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries, Fisheries Science, Wildlife, Biology, Zoology, or other related field.
Experience with data collection and statistical analysis.
Strong organization, time management and problem-solving skills.
Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment and discretion.
