In addition to our main facility in Tomah, we offer services in four community-based outpatient clinics. These clinics are located in La Crosse, Clark County, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids. VAMC Tomah is one of seven facilities that comprise Veterans Integrated Services Network 12 (VISN 12) which is administratively headquartered at Hines, IL, and includes facilities in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

The Acute Psychiatric Care nurse works on an 11 bed unit that is staffed 24 hours a day to provide acute psychiatric care for Veterans. The population served includes Veterans with a variety of psychiatric and medical diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidality, alcohol detoxification, lung disease, heart disease, and liver disease among others. The Acute Psychiatric Care nurse administers medications and carries out other procedures per established policies and guidelines; such as behavioral de-escalation techniques, restraint/seclusion, blood glucose and vital sign monitoring, use of bar code medication administration (BCMA) program, Doppler Unit, and use of oxygen concentrator during employment. The nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. She/he assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. She/he also influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.
