DESCRIPTION : NETWORK ADMIN SPECIALIST
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The position of Network Administration Specialist provides technical expertise for the College’s computing environment including secure access for students and staff members to various network services. The NAS assists in the development of the help desk, virus protection planning and directly supports the local/wide area network. The NAS participates in technical planning and security policy decisions as a member of the Information Technology technical team. The NAS participates in technical planning and security policy decisions as a member of the Information Technology technical team. The NAS supervises electronic technicians, technical assistants and other technical support personnel as assigned by the Chief Information Officer. The NAS supports back-end and front-end services for distance learning, automated FTE collection and e-mail services. The NAS has a thorough knowledge of networking protocols for all data communications including IP telephony, wireless networks, broadcast video, and multi-media streaming technologies. The NAS reports directly to the Chief Information Officer or designee. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supports operations for the College’s network systems including the IP telephony system, video conferencing, e-mail services, helpdesk, distance learning infrastructure and Web services.
Consults regularly with other network managers to ensure a secure networking environment
Supports CITS staff operations for desktop computing and College-wide networking services
Supports the wireless networking environment
Supports the Windows X server and desktop environment, cluster design and database synchronization in a Windows X environment.
Supports systems integration with the College’s ERP computing software and the Windows X environment
Supports the SQL database infrastructure
Assists in the development of new technologies to further improve Information Technology Services at the College.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The NAS administers the support structure for the Windows X server environment including e-mail, voice mail and IP telephony. The NAS supports various integration policies between the Datatel ERP system and other networking systems. The NAS supports and assist in the operations of the College help desk and CITS technical support response system. The NAS must have through knowledge of Cisco network devices (PIX Firewalls, VPN, Switches, Routers, MCUs), IP Telephony unified messaging system implemented on Cisco Call managers and Unity servers, Windows server and desktop software, Microsoft SQL servers, video conferencing systems and Antivirus enterprise solutions. Demonstrates a commitment to fostering and advancing a diverse and inclusive work force.
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with Bachelor’s in Engineering Technology, Computer Information Systems or Computer Science. Extended knowledge of Windows X, IP Telephony, CISCO switches, CISCO Call manager and all networking protocols for data communication. Through knowledge of SQL, Microsoft SQL server and ODBC; Minimum five (5) years of experience in networking in a higher educational environment. Ability to interface with all levels of the organization. Microsoft Certification is preferred.
