Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Retail Operations, the Academic Materials Manager is responsible for the oversight and management of The Cornell Store’s Academic Materials team. This team is comprised of a collection of highly-aligned specialty retail departments, including our Textbook/Course Materials department, Custom Publishing services, the General Books department, and Cornell Tech Connect. This position is charged with the mission of finding creative and sustainable ways to increase the products and services we offer to the Cornell community while working effectively and collaboratively with retail managers, as well as our operations, inventory, and sales teams to increase sales and reduce costs. |
The Academic Materials Manager is responsible for the ongoing business development of course material initiatives and the adoption of new technologies in an effort to deliver content in new ways to the Cornell community. This role also takes the lead on vendor relationship management for vendors specific to the Academic Materials unit(s). The Manager will regularly track sales, prepare budgets, and create and monitor other key performance indicators (KPI’s) as appropriate to ensure the maximization of resources. This position will manage a team of inventory planners and coordinators and assist in ensuring efficient and effective workflow; including the adoption process, inventory sourcing, sales floor execution, e-commerce content management, and day to day operations. This position also plays a key role in helping to enhance Cornell faculty and administration outreach initiatives and will partner with retail managers, the merchandising team, and the communications team on planning and executing various seasonal and promotional events
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years of experience in retail management, specialty procurement, and/or supply chain management; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing process improvements that result in significant gains in efficiency and service levels. Prior supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a strong work team in a very dynamic environment. Experience in budget development and management, sales budget accountability, and logistics management. Strong understanding of the digital course material landscape and other technology integrations. Strong analytical and computational skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to quickly develop a strong technical understanding of in-house and third party software platforms in critical.
Preferred Qualifications: Retail experience in an academic or tech sales environment strongly preferred. Retail software experience and/or the ability to specify, test, and implement software enhancements. Development or participation in an effective faculty communications program. Development or participation in successful course material programs; such as digital initiatives, inclusive access and textbook rental programs.
