Computing and Multimedia Technologies (CMT) at the Survey Research Center (SRC) of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) provides broad computing services to research investigators and staff. This position includes programming support for a broad spectrum of research related services using a variety of tools and methods including the development/refinement of statistical programs such as: IVEware http://www.isr.umich.edu/src/smp/ive/ and SEARCH http://www.isr.umich.edu/src/smp/search/search_user.html )
CMT is composed of a team of approximately 20 members who provide programming, networking, desktop support, IT security and guidance related to systems design and development for SRC and ISR members. ISR, in existence for over 75 years, is noted for and dedicated to providing social research methods and research results for the public benefit which are often used at the state and federal levels for understanding and informing policy and program decisions. Working in ISR provides a broad exposure to a breadth of issues and related research efforts. A successful candidate for this job will be expected to:
Work with clients to develop system requirements and specifications including costs for project proposals. Develop system prototypes and completed systems.
Analyze requirements, design, and develop systems of various types including, but not limited to, web, client server and statistical applications
Use current state-of-the art design and programming tools for client server, database, web and web services systems, including but not limited to Microsoft.NET, Visual Studio, HTML/HTML5, PHP, Python, R, C++ and various frameworks and other tools as required
Design and implement database structures for Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, MySQL and other database systems as required. Share the responsibility of database administrator with other CMT members.
Maintain existing systems, analyze existing system functions and critical problems working with users to determine and implement required revision / resolution
Train users in the operation of new systems, coordinating ongoing problem resolution and providing enhancements are a common job duty
Work as integral team member within CMT sharing and coordinating in a relatively continuous, open, low ego, collaborative manner
Communicate and coordinate work with various organizations internal and external to SRC and ISR
Assure compliance with security, affirmative action and safety programs
Retain current programming and design skills by taking advantage of various trainings/seminars, online and in person
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or related field
Three years of professional programming (intermediate level) and five years of professional programming (senior level) using Microsoft .NET, PHP, Python, R, and C++ or other emerging technologies. Professional internships may be included as experience.
Experience in the development and maintenance of quantitative/statistical programs
Three years of Web programming experience (may be concurrent with above)
Demonstrated ability to work with a high functioning team of System Administrators and Hardware/Software support experts
Demonstrated ability to successfully provide client service and support
Ability to work on multiple projects, effectively managing individual schedule and work commitments
Successful experience as a database administrator
Experience supporting WordPress web sites
Interest in developing skills in various flavors of cloud computing design and implementation
An ongoing interest in personal and professional development
Position level and salary dependent upon qualifications of selected candidate.
Intermediate level salary range: $60,000-$70,000, annually
Senior level salary range: $80,000-$100,000, annually
Must be able to successfully pass a background check at the federal I C5 level including a credit check.
