The Program Assistant is an integral member of the John D. O'Bryant African American Institute team whose goal is to facilitate student development, retention and successful graduation of African American students at Northeastern University. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Leadership and Global Engagement, the role of the Student Development Coordinator will be to create, develop and sustain strategies for an environment in which the opportunities for African American student development and success are increased.
A key role of the Program Assistant will be to support and assess programs, initiatives, projects and/or events that will provide Northeastern University African American students with a wide array of academic, experiential, and leadership opportunities. The Program Assistant will be responsible for tracking, assessing, and reporting on key student programs and initiatives including, the JDOAAI's community service and student grant programs. Additionally the Program Assistant will support the tracking and assessment of the broader JDOAAI student development programing, including creating assessments, as well as compiling, organizing, and reporting on this data.
Working to develop students is also a key function of the Program Assistant. In particular, the Program Assistant will work to connect students with a variety of academic and scholarly resources including tutorial services, writing support, information literacy resources, and independent research opportunities.
The Program Assistant will also coordinate the JDOAAI special collections, and all projects and services related to this department, including maintaining the special collection, and working with faculty, staff, and students to access the information. To ensure the completion of such tasks, The Program Assistant is expected to work closely with Snell Library, University Archives and Special Collections.
The Program Assistant must be able to represent the Institute in a professional, enthusiastic manner with a customer service and team focus. Strong organizational skill sets, as well as skill sets in communication and technology are an important attribute for this position. Additionally, the ability to work collaboratively across the university is also essential.
This position is at 28 hours per week, part time for 12 months.
Associates degree required, Bachelors degree in library sciences or higher education preferred, along with 2 3 years of experience in higher education, preferably in student affairs. Experience with advising and working with students from diverse backgrounds, including students who identify as Black or African American is important. Must have knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the cultural experience of students of color. Personal computer skills and strong written and oral communications skills required. Must have experience and be comfortable with Microsoft Office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc. Additionally, competency preferences include ability to leverage knowledge, manage change, take a customer relations approach, good priority setting, creative and innovative manager, relationship building and managing, plan and measure tasks, cost conscious, entrepreneurial, technologically comfortable, and diversity conscious.
