Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Community and Economic Development (CED) and the Value Added Agriculture (VAA) program units, both within Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, are seeking qualified candidates for a Field Specialist I/II – Retail Business Specialist position. The successful candidate will provide technical assistance and consultation, develop educational curriculum, and deliver educational programs for retail business owners and for communities seeking to build stronger local retail economies.
The Field Specialist will work within the Local Economies Knowledge Team of the CED program unit and the VAA Agriculture Team of Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension and Outreach program unit. These teams are comprised of faculty, educators, and specialists located throughout the state.
The individual in this role will work in a variety of ways to strengthen local retail economies. A primary focus will be on the linkages between food producers and food retailers to expand the food options offered to consumers. This will include:
- Developing and delivering high quality educational programs and publications primarily directed at food retailers.
- Building networks linking producers and retailers.
- Providing consultative services and conducting feasibility studies for retailers.
- Assisting retailers with succession planning.
The Field Specialist will also work with retailers outside of the food sector (Main Street businesses, entrepreneurs, etc.) to provide appropriate consultative services, feasibility studies, and succession planning assistance as described above.
This position will be filled at the Field Specialist I or II level. In addition to Field Specialist I duties, a Field Specialist II will create and deliver comprehensive and complex programming; conduct needs assessment activities; identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients' needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary programming; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise at the local and state level.
The successful candidate will possess exceptional analytical, public relations, and written and verbal communication skills in order to effectively represent Community Economic Development and Value Added Agriculture programs and outreach to the public. The candidate will have the ability to prioritize multiple ongoing tasks concurrently to ensure immediate deadlines are met. Outstanding organizational skills and strong attention to detail will also be needed in order be effective in this role.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Degree in Business, Agribusiness, Economics, Supply Chain Management or closely related field.
Additional years of related experience.
Experience in business development and consulting.
Experience conducting feasibility studies.
Experience in supply chain management.
Experience in the food sector.
Demonstrated ability to speak Spanish fluently.
The location of this position is the ISU campus in Ames.
The duties of this position require willingness to work evenings and weekends.
This position requires travel to carry out Extension and Outreach responsibilities and candidates must have access to their own transportation.
