The Cal Poly Scholars program serves high achieving students from California Partner High Schools through co-curricular programming, counseling, services, a residential learning community, and a renewable financial award. The Cal Poly Scholar program is a co-curricular program that works with a wide-range of cross-departmental stakeholders, including university advancement officers, university administrators, and members of faculty. Through Cal Poly Scholars students utilize a wide array of academic enhancement services that promote student success, self-advocacy, multi-cultural awareness, co-curricular involvement, timely progress toward degree, career/graduate school planning, and university graduation.
Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, the Assistant Director is responsible for the administration of The Cal Poly Scholars (CPS) program. The incumbent acts as a campus leader to promote inclusivity; develop guidelines for programs and services; represent programs and the campus to the public, media, and recognized organizations; and maintain working relationships with a wide range of constituencies including, but not limited to students, faculty and staff.
The Assistant Director for Cal Poly Scholars has responsibility for formulating policy and procedure analyses, evaluation, and development to revise and implement program changes within CPS. The Assistant Director manages all aspects of the day-to-day operation of CPS. The Assistant Director makes decisions and sets policy regarding orientation, retention, counseling services and academic enhancement for CPS program. The Assistant Director collaborates with program leads within SAS department. The Assistant Director collaborates with University Advancement and related gifts and funding, and works with the Senior Operations Analyst with all budgets and recruitments.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's or higher level degree and six years of progressively responsible student services professional experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Strong supervision/leadership skills and ability to apply modern management/administrative techniques to coordinate and manage staff. Must be able to lead staff to meet program goals, ability to evaluate and adjust department-related programs as needed to reach these goals.
Demonstrated critical thinking and interpretive skills to analyze situations, define problems, develop, interpret and apply policies, identify concerns, develop and implement solutions.
Demonstrated expertise working with multi-cultural, low-income, underrepresented and disabled populations.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate formative assessment plans for departmental programs.
Ability to establish and maintain highly effective, professional working relationships with campus and CSU administrators, auxiliaries, faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, ability to articulate in high-level interpersonal situations.
Demonstrated high standards of conduct, ethics, sensitivity and confidentiality dealing with various internal and external constituencies.
Strong ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, initiative, problem-solving, commitment, creativity, professional responsibility and judgment, ability to represent the University and its interests in a professional and conscientious manner.
Exceptional organizational skills, including ability to apply independent judgment, initiative and discretion to address problems, and be adaptable to changes in systems and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with a finished and effective product. Ability to adapt to, and work effectively in, a fast-paced and multi-priority-driven environment.
Ability to act promptly to resolve actual and potential problems from a broad perspective and discern underlying causes of the problems and take corrective action as necessary.
Demonstrated ability to work independently in a self-directed manner.
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling with a demonstrated ability to produce professional communications that meet high standards for appearance, grammar, spelling and clarity.
Demonstrated high level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, word processing, email, and electronic calendaring software.
Progressively responsible student services professional experience at the post-secondary level.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for continued professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
May be required to complete a Supplemental Employment Application Questionnaire, which contains questions pertaining to conviction history, and submit it when requested by Cal Poly. This disclosure is confidential and will not necessarily preclude applicants from employment.
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
