The Director of Operations is responsible for the successful creation and support of the University’s technology infrastructure and end user service needs by managing risks and opportunities. The Director will be responsible for making key design and implementation decisions with the technical operations teams such as scheduling tasks, tracking dependencies, managing change requests and guaranteeing the quality of delivery while educating the technical team on best practices. The Director of Operations will be responsible for the on-site staff that support the network, servers, administrative and academic desktop support, and help desk as well as act as the project manager and liaison for project teams that include both on-site and Dynamic Campus On-Demand resources ensuring University’s business needs and objectives are effectively integrated into the use and functionality of all solutions. The Director of Operations will ensure adherence to best practices and proven methodologies to promote continuous information operations and the integration of new value-added technical services and technology. The Director’s direct reports include the Manager of Network Services and the Manager of User Services.
*Supervise network and end user operations staff including hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining. *Guides and provides work direction to technical staff, contract staff and/or student employees and determines appropriate coverage for all hours of operation. Defines the technological and customer service strategy with the teams of each project: pipeline, tools, and key procedures. *Assesses risk and develops mitigation plans. *Establishes standards and procedures to track and measure project's progression. * Evaluates teams, identifying strengths, problem areas, and developing plans for improving performance. *Works closely with the CIO and University CISO in regards to all information and data security activities. *Evaluates interview candidates for technical positions. *Scouts for and evaluates new technology, tools, and process as opportunities for innovation and operational excellence. *Oversees technical design documentation and process for accuracy and timeliness. Provides input to the other disciplines on the practicality of initial design goals and impact to the overall project timeline. * Evaluates implementation on design and task thoroughness. *Helps identify high risk areas for projects daily operations. *Proactively identifies weak systems that need improvement and schedules corrective action, when possible. *Creates test processes for system features, where possible, and contributes to the build system. *Designs system administration solutions for project and operational needs. *Develops and maintains installation and configuration procedures. *Contributes to and maintain system standards. *Researches and recommends innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for technology administration tasks. *Identifies approaches that leverage resources and provide economies of scale. *Supports, implements and/or administers network applications such as Microsoft Windows Active Directory (including backup, user account management, e-mail systems, internet access, office systems and applications support). *Performs daily system monitoring, verifying integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, review system and application logs, and verify completion of scheduled jobs such as backups. *Provides periodic reports on system and network monitoring results to support availability of systems and capacity planning. *Provides periodic reports on help desk and end user satisfaction metrics. *Repairs and recovers from hardware or software failures. *Identifies root causes of failure to ensure minimize repeated repairs and recovery. *Performs ongoing performance tuning, upgrades, and resource optimization as required. *Communicates frequently with impacted constituencies.
