With more than 260 major buildings enhancing the magnificent landscape of the Ithaca campus, approximately 1,000 highly talented and dedicated staff serve as steward of the campus resources and operations.
Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. The Grounds Department is looking for dedicated temporary grounds construction workers with 6 months of full time availability beginning in April.
Performs manual labor and independently operates light equipment for general construction, utility maintenance, utility excavations and/or landscape construction tasks including catch basin cleaning, tamping, water/ sewage issues, and other duties with a high regard for safety. Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment, or facilities. Safely operates hand and self-propelled equipment and tools including water pumps, pickup trucks, trenchers, shovels, brooms, rakes, tampers and jackhammers to achieve required construction standards.
Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays) to meet seasonal work demand. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods. May come into contact with sewage and dead animals. Regular exposure to bees and pollen.
- Position is full time (39 hours per week), casual, non benefits eligible for a six-month term. Rate of pay is $12.00/hour.

High School diploma or equivalent. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license. May be required to drive a university vehicle. Ability to take direction and perform manual labor tasks in hot/dirty environments. Excellent interpersonal (oral and written) skills in order to interact with a diverse range of people. Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team. A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community. Is motivated and takes initiative to be proactive. Demonstrated experience utilizing independent judgment and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment. Must have reliable transportation to report to work. Must be able to lift more than 50 lbs.
Formal training in construction technologies or equipment operation. Two (2) years of demonstrated work experience in construction or related field experience, such as working around underground utilities or with concrete or blacktop in a professional or commercial setting. Working knowledge of road/infrastructure maintenance and repair, utility excavations, or related field or education in related field. Experience and ability to work in a fast paced municipal type environment. Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the utility excavation trade.
