The captioner provides direct captioning services to University students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a variety of settings both on and off campus. Captioners also accommodate requests for captioning media used to further the University’s mission. This position requires evening and occasional weekend work. This position reports to the associate director or manager of the Interpreting/Captioning Unit.
• Provide real-time captioning and post-production captioning services to the University community at-large in a variety of situations including but not limited to: undergraduate to postgraduate level courses, meetings, medical, dental, and mental health appointments, and commencements.
• Transcribe spoken information as close to verbatim as possible, summarize information (meaning-for-meaning) depending on the speed of the speaker.
• Accommodate and provide flexibility in scheduling, including some evenings and weekends, on-call shifts, and overtime when necessary. This position requires occasional overtime work.
• Adhere to the C-Print Captionists’ Code of Ethics
• Stay current on issues relevant to captioning profession as well as issues among the cultural communities the profession serves.
• Assist University units in ensuring physical, programmatic, informational, policy, and attitudinal access.
• Provide back-up office support when needed and available
• Participate on at least one ICU committee
• Follow all University, DRC, and ICU policies and procedures.
• Promote disability self-advocacy, pride, community, universal design, responsibility, dignity, equity, independence and the fostering of multicultural community.
• Other duties as assigned which are consistent with the mission of the Disability Resource Center and/or the Office for Equity and Diversity.
