The Department of Dining Services at the University of Connecticut is seeking an Area Manager in Retail Operations. This position is a state, salaried, full-time position employed by the University of Connecticut’s Department of Dining Services, Waterbury campus. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Retail Operations or the appropriate designee, oversees, and participates in all aspects of the daily operation of the Starbucks retail operations at the Waterbury campus. This position contributes to Starbucks success by leading a team to create and maintain the Starbucks Experience. The Area Manager is required to regularly and customarily exercise discretion in managing the overall operation of the store. In particular, a majority of time is spent supervising and directing the workforce, making staffing decisions (i.e. hiring, training, evaluating, disciplining, discharging, staffing and scheduling), ensuring customer satisfaction and product quality, managing the store’s financial performance and managing safety and security within the store. The incumbent is responsible for modeling and acting in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles and the standards of the Department of Dining Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is responsible for maintaining and adhering to all policies and training as prescribed by Starbucks for the operation of a Starbucks unit. Responsible for the hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating all employees working in the restaurant. Determines necessary staffing levels and other personnel matters in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, budget and labor contracts; implements approved plans. Ensures that high levels of food quality and customer service are maintained. Changes menu items based on the Starbuck cycles and seasonal changes. Supervises the ordering of food and supplies for the location. Maintains the financial records for the restaurant. Adheres to Starbucks advertising and promotional activities to maintain a high volume of business. Maintains a high level of visibility in the dining room during busy times to ensure the smooth operation of the facility and to promote good communication with the customers. Maintains the highest standards of sanitation and cleanliness in the facility. Ensures the facility is kept in excellent repair.
Leadership: This position is responsible for setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability and modeling how the team will work together. Demonstrates a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events and manages smooth transitions thereafter to keep the store operating to standards and to set a positive example for the store team. Displays a customer first attitude by training and holding employees accountable for delivering legendary customer service. Drives the implementation of company programs by developing action plans and directly motivating and instructing the store team to implement them to meet operation and organizational objectives. Manages with integrity, honesty and knowledge that promote the culture, values and mission of Starbucks. Plans, identifies, communicates, and delegates appropriate responsibilities and practices to store partners to ensure smooth flow of operations. Provides coaching and direction to the store team to take action and to achieve operational goals. Constantly reviews store environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns and opportunities for improvement to provide coaching and direction to the store team to achieve operational goals.
Planning and Execution: Developing strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results. Monitors and manages store-staffing levels to ensure employee development and talent acquisition to achieve and maintain store operational requirements. Utilizes existing tools to identify and prioritize communications and regularly uses discretion to filter communications to the store team.
Business Requirements: Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities. Solicits customer feedback to understand customer needs and the needs of the local community. Uses all operational tools to plan for and achieve operational excellence in the store. Uses discretion in accessing external resources to support store operations. Utilizes management information tools and analyzes financial reports to identify and address trends and issues in store performance.
Team Building: Providing employees with coaching feedback and developmental opportunities and building effective teams. Actively manages store employees by regularly conducting performance assessments, providing feedback and setting challenging goals to improve performance. Manages ongoing employee performance using performance management tools to support organizational objectives. Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results. Develops and maintains positive relationships with employees by understanding and addressing individual motivation, needs and concerns. Ensures employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements. Recognizes and reinforces individual and team accomplishments by using existing organizational tools and programs as well as by finding new, creative and effective methods of recognition. Utilizes and demonstrates effective management principles and practices to create and maintain a successful store team resulting in an environment where partners are valued and respected. Performs other duties as assigned.
- One to three years’ experience management a Starbucks location or comparable coffee venue
- Bachelor degree in food service field, such as Foods and Nutrition, Institutional Management or equivalent combination of education and related work experience
- Demonstrated financial experience with profit and loss statements while operating a successful unit.
- Managerial and organizational ability and strong personnel skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of a retail coffee shop, including procurement, food preparation, sanitation, equipment, merchandising and cost control
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles
- Public relations skills and Creativity
- ServSafe Certification
- Catering experience in a moderate to high volume setting
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
The salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Target salary is $55,471 annually. Comprehensive benefit package which includes medical and dental insurance.
