Purpose: The Department of Applied Mathematics at Santa Clara University seeks applications for up to two academic year adjunct lecturers (AYALs). Appointment is at 100% FTE for teaching the equivalent of nine four-unit courses distributed among three academic quarters; the actual appointment may involve a smaller FTE percentage
Salary: Depending on qualifications; benefits eligible
Basic Qualifications: Earned graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in mathematics or a related field
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching mathematics and its applications to graduate and/or undergraduate engineering students, and understanding of the Santa Clara teaching model.
Responsibilities: ResponsibilitiesA. Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in applied mathematics, including1. Preparing for and conducting all assigned class meetings (undergraduate courses between 8 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. three days per week; graduate courses before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. once or twice per week); 2. Assigning and evaluating student work appropriately; 3. Being available to students for consultation outside of class; and 4. Assigning student grades appropriately and submitting them on time to the Office of Student Records.B. Fulfilling other instructional or academic duties as assigned by the Chair of Applied Mathematics or by the Dean of Engineering, including1. Consulting with the Chair of Applied Mathematics about course content and other matters as appropriate; 2. Submitting an electronic copy of each examination and each syllabus (including approved expected learning outcomes) each quarter to the Chair of Applied Mathematics; 3. Submitting a photocopy of an appropriate sample of each students work in each course that is being evaluated officially during the 2017-2018 academic year as part of the departments ongoing assessment efforts; 4. Following departmental procedures regarding employment of graders and complying with university and school policies, including those delineated in the School of Engineering Term Faculty Handbook; 5. Submitting in a timely manner a faculty activity report completed as requested by the Dean of Engineering; and 6. Attending departmental and school meetings and other events as requested.
