A Forensic Nurse Examiner is an RN who has been specially trained to provide comprehensive care to adults, adolescents and children who have been impacted by sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking, and non-intentional trauma. The Forensic Nurse Examiner Clinician will be responsible for staffing the Forensic Nurse Examiner team, providing medical/legal exams to patients of the Memorial Healthcare System who present with forensic healthcare needs, and maintaining chain of custody with medical/legal documentation and storage. The Forensic Nurse Examiner is also responsible for testifying as an expert witness in the court of law; providing education/outreach to the community at large. The Forensic Nurse Examiner Clinician will interface with medical professionals, law enforcement agencies, criminal justice, victim advocacy and external support agencies that provide services to victims of crime and violence.
Since 1995, Memorial Hospital-UCH located in Colorado Springs, has housed the only Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program for sexual assault victims living in El Paso and Teller counties. The largest and most comprehensive in the state with 24-hour in-house services, our program sits within a new, state-of-the-art 68-bed Emergency Department at Memorial Hospital- UCH, with its own suite of rooms to accommodate the patient population we serve in privacy and comfort, but with ready access to all additional emergency services
Our FNE's are registered nurses with specialized classroom and clinical training in the evaluation and treatment of trauma in patients who have experienced or are experiencing violence or abuse. Every patient seen gets a complete head to toes assessment with injury documentation utilizing body maps and diagrams, as well as photography, evidence collection as is appropriate, resources and referrals, mandatory healthcare professional reporting requirements are met and documented and safety planning is documented when necessary.
A trained forensic nurse is available in house, 24-hours a day for any of the following:
sexual abuse and assault
intimate partner violence
The FNE team also works closely with local law enforcement agencies, Department of Human Services, community based advocates and the District Attorney's Office. Additionally the team routinely provides education to other health care professionals, local academic institutions, school districts and community partners.
Requirements (education, licensures, certification)
Effective 4/1/2014, a BSN is required for new hires or to be attained within three years of acceptance of the position.
Graduate of an accredited Registered/Professional Nursing program.
Effective 10/1/2013, BSN required for new hires or attain within three years of acceptance of the position.
State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
3 years of RN experience in an acute care/hospital setting.
BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire. All life support certification cards must be issued by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer is only good upon hire and all renewals will need to be through an American Heart Association sanctioned course.)
Completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training within 3 months of hire.
