TheUniversity of Maryland School of Dentistry (SOD) is seeking a Director of Development and Major Gifts(Major Gifts Officer II). Reportingto the Assistant Dean of Development, the Director of Development and MajorGifts will be an instrumental partner to enhance and enrich the existingdevelopment operations. This individual will work independently andcollaboratively with volunteers, dental school development staff, and withrepresentatives of the University to inspire private donations of funds andequipment to the school. The Director of Development and Major Gifts will playa key role in formulating strategies and initiatives that strengthen alumnirelations and major gift fundraising. This individual will help develop donor,correspondence, plan and participate in events, and in every way ensurepositive and purposeful alumni, prospect, and donor relations. The Director ofDevelopment and Major Gifts will provide creative solutions using soundjudgment while working under defined guidelines of the school. Ability totravel locally and nationally is essential.

- Manage a portfolio of approximately 120 – 140 significant major donors and donor prospects rated $25,000 and above. The goal for dollars raised will be determined in consultation with the Assistant Dean on an annual basis following a portfolio and pipeline review and in support of the overall fundraising goal.
- Complete a minimum of 120 visits per year both locally and nationally and where appropriate solicit other gifts, such as annual or deferred.
- Identify, develop, and execute strategic plans for the evaluations, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects.
- In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, develop annual major giving strategies to increase goal dollars. Contribute individually or in cooperation with others to achieve assignments and goals. Plan and complete major gift cultivation with minimal supervision. Assist SOD leadership and staff in pursuing and closing major gifts.
- Analyze the effectiveness of programs and recommend improvements or new strategies.
- Create effective communication, including correspondence, proposals, and marketing tools, for SOD Development office.
- Adhere to and propose school standards of operation, policies, protocols, and procedures to ensure compliant, effective, and efficient operations of functions.
- Perform other duties as required, such providing primary office contact and identifying faculty funding needs or orient or provide training to development officers and staff.
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of development experience with one (1) year proven track record with individual and major gifts. Experience in higher education or a complex organization a plus.
Occasional out-of-state travel required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess knowledge of best practices in non-profit fundraising, major gift cultivation and reporting and receipting requirements, and corporate and foundation relations. Ability to perform position in compliance with all requirements/regulations/laws and -related laws and regulations. Proficient in the use of development database systems and desktop reporting.
- Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and to maintain awareness with dentistry and development trends and influences. Possess knowledge of SOD education tracks, research and community service efforts in order to match donor interests to projects and programs.
- Able to assume personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite to effectively perform assigned duties. Maintains productivity and uses knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base. Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research, gather information, solve problems, and make decisions.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Writes and presents information in a clear and concise way. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to use relationship building skills to identify and cultivate new prospects as well as maintain and build upon current relationships and prospects.
- Ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students, and the general public and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, confidential, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with other to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers.
