This is a TEMPORARY, PART-TIME position. Schedule is rotating and variable and may include occasional evenings and weekends. It begins Upon Hire and is expected to run through February of 2018.

The Seattle MESA program is hiring a Temporary, Part-Time (25% FTE) Tutoring Instructor to begin Winter/Spring 2017 for an appointment as the instructor for our tutoring program. The position runs through the end of the Spring Quarter (June 15, 2017) and will resume Autumn quarter 2017 through February 2018. Seattle MESA Program Description: Seattle MESA, focus on at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth, including under-represented minorities and women. Our programs provide middle and high school students, their teachers and parents, with innovative, hands-on opportunities in mathematics, basic and applied science, and engineering in both formal and informal settings. Seattle MESA is working with the local public schools to provide tutoring in math and high school students in the MESA program, with a goal of expansion into middle school math, and middle and high school science over the next few years.
The Seattle MESA Tutor Training Program provides training for tutors in the following three areas:
Subject area competency.
Tutoring and pedagogy skills.
Cultural competency and bias training.
Our training program is designed to prepare UW graduate and undergraduate students to work one-on-one and in small groups with an emphasis on middle and high school students from at-risk and economically disadvantaged communities, including under-represented groups. All Seattle MESA Tutors are trained as STEM tutors through our training program as follows:
Attend a weekly seminar during their first quarter of tutoring (CENV 420).
Tutor students once a week on site at a partner school.
Complete and pass the appropriate subject area tests equivalent to the end of course exams from the Seattle Public Schools.
Complete a background check through the Seattle Public Schools and the University of Washington.
The Tutoring Instructor will work with the Seattle MESA Team to train and support a cohort of trained tutors. Our tutors work with students from local public schools. The Seattle MESA Director identifies schools and contacts within the school. The MESA Coordinators serves as the MESA point of contact to the school and
directs our tutoree recruitment and scheduling. The Tutoring Instructor works to schedule tutors during tutoring times and class observation periods. The Instructor is responsible for teaching the tutor training courses, supporting tutors and managing tutor recruitment logistics and emails. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
Serve as the instructor for the Seattle MESA course series. (80%)
Facilitate 6-8 hour in class basic skills tutor training workshop (1-credit course) during spring and fall quarters (3/year)
Facilitate weekly intro tutoring seminar (2-credit course) fall and winter quarters.
Facilitate advanced tutor training seminar (2-credit course) for returning tutors fall quarter.
Facilitate the tutoring practicum (1-credit course) each quarter using online tools, one on one meetings and site visits.
Manage tutoring program email and course registration.
Collaborate with the Seattle MESA Coordinator and Student Assistant to manage scheduling of in class observations and tutoring.
Attend on-site tutoring regularly to evaluate the program and support tutors.
Execute seminar and workshop evaluation and analysis.
Update and organize workshop and seminar lessons plans, materials, course website and emails.
Edit and update course websites.
Create and update subject areas proficiency tests and answer keys with in collaboration with SPS Curriculum Specialist.
Administer and grade subject area tests for tutors.
Manage tutoring related emails and course registration.
Collaborate with the Seattle MESA Coordinators to manage class and tutoring logistics.
Promote and implement the vision and mission of Seattle/Puget Sound MESA. (10%)
Other duties as assigned (10%)
| Bachelor's degree in mathematics, science, education, or equivalent, and at least three years' related experience. |
Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and follow through with minimal direction in order to perform effectively under conditions of frequent interruptions, fluctuating workloads, and conflicting time demands.
Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining work plans and timelines for tutoring program.
Ability to organize material, information, and personnel in a systematic way to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer, technology and social media skills, specifically including advanced word processing (such as Word), and web content management.
Demonstrated skill in coordinating special events (e.g., workshops, meetings, conferences).
Strong communication skills, including writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills
Able to travel to off-campus sites and work some evenings and/or weekends. A valid U.S. driver's
Ability and experience working with a team. The Instructor will work with SMESA team to deliver
the tutoring program workshops and courses and be the primary contact for the SMESA tutors
Experience teaching small discussion based classes
Experience facilitation skills
Experience with high school teaching, tutoring and mentoring individual students
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with diversity and inclusiveness; able to work with and
facilitate conversation amongst diverse groups of tutors and students
Demonstrated experience with under-represented minority (URM) students
Ability to be self-motivated and work independently
Strong organizational skills
| Knowledge of university programs, and ability to work directly with University of Washington student services staff. |
Knowledge of university- and campus-wide administrative and academic organizations.
Knowledge of and commitment to Washington MESA goals and efforts.
Advanced use of spreadsheet (e.g., Excel) programs, including filtering, pivot tables, linked files, and simple statistical routines. Knowledge of database systems, and ability to design reports from existing databases.
|CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:|
| Must be able to lift heavy items (30+ pounds). |
Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.
Must be able to travel within a 50 mile radius almost daily.
Ability to efficiently and effectively travel locally between work sites on a frequent basis.
