The assistant editor, reporting to the editorial director, supports content planning and production for two prominent College communication channels: the award-winning Holy Cross Magazine and the College's online newsroom at news.Holycross.edu. The assistant editor is the project manager for Holy Cross Magazine and serves as an integral part of the broader content team in the Office of College Marketing and Communications, sharing the Holy Cross story in support of the College's strategic marketing priorities.
Oversees project management of Holy Cross Magazine, a quarterly publication that engages alumni and raises the College's national profile. Tasks include assigning, writing and editing content, managing freelancers and vendors, and collaborating with other College stakeholders. Participates in a weekly news meeting to plan, prioritize and support creation of compelling content in a variety of media. Brings creative ideas that advance the quality of the Magazine and online news content. Interviews sources and gathers news both on and off campus; attends and reports on a variety of events, ranging from lectures and performances, to Commencement and alumni reunions. Regularly interacts with members of the College community, ranging from senior leadership to students, faculty and staff. Contributes to social media planning. Assists with and/or manages a variety of administrative tasks, including overseeing reader correspondence; scheduling photo shoots; reviewing invoices; managing contact files and photo archives; distribution of and ordering additional copies of the magazine as needed; and other duties as assigned. Collaborates with other members of the College Marketing & Communications staff on major events, initiatives, and publications. Understands and supports the College's mission. Work to distinguish the College as a leading Catholic, Jesuit, liberal arts college dedicated to preparing the whole student. Serves as a positive, knowledgeable representative of the content team, fostering and strengthening relationships with College students, faculty and staff. Is committed to teamwork and excellence.
B.A. in English, journalism, communications, or related field plus at least three (3) years' experience in print publication production. Strong writing, editing skills and understanding of AP style. Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to work autonomously and as a team member. Demonstrated experience in developing great stories from concept to publication; strong design sensibility. Ability to meet daily deadlines, handle multiple projects simultaneously and shift priorities when necessary. Proficiency in Microsoft Word; proficiency in Mac platforms, with knowledge of Adobe InDesign. Experience in a newsroom or other publication experience preferred. Experience managing social media and using Drupal and Wordpress a plus. Must be able to attend occasional evening events.
