The Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students (AVC/DOS) provides strategic direction for the development of a holistic approach to ensuring student health, personal development, and overall well-being, for a diverse student population. Specifically, the AVC/DOS oversees the Division of Student Affairs’ health, wellness and community standards cluster--a comprehensive portfolio that includes the following departments/offices as direct reports: the Habif Health and Wellness Center (including medical services; mental health counseling services, and wellness education and advocacy); student conduct and community standards; the relationship and sexual violence prevention (RSVP) program; the WashU Cares program (Washington University’s behavioral intervention program). As part of the health, wellness and community standards cluster, the AVC/DOS also works closely with Directors of Athletics and Recreation. The AVC/DOS serves on a variety of University committees and task forces and serves as a primary point person for the University’s response to students of concern and for Title IX issues.
- Supervises an Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (the Habif Health and Wellness Center which includes medical services; mental health services; and health promotion and wellness programs); Associate Dean of Students (Student Conduct and Community Standards); Assistant Dean for Students (WashU Cares program) and the Director of the RSVP Center. Management responsibility includes hiring, training, supervising, evaluating and mentoring professional staff, as well as budget management and oversight.
- Provides leadership and vision for health and wellness programs and initiatives on campus, working in close collaboration with various campus departments, and students, staff and faculty toward supporting and enhancing Washington University’s focus on health and wellness.
- Serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs’ leadership and advisory teams and works collaboratively with other team members toward meeting university and divisional goals for student life on campus.
- Serves as a resource and referral person for students and family members to help resolve concerns or issues related to students. Serves on-call evening and weekends as needed to respond to student concerns. Facilitates communication with parents and family members as well as the Washington University community in times of student crisis.
- Serves as a member of the WashU Cares Team (the behavioral intervention team).
- Advises the undergraduate representatives to the Board of Trustees and oversees the annual undergraduate representatives’ selection and onboarding process.
- Attend trainings, conferences, and continuing education workshops related to best practices in the field.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- A Master’s degree in Education, College Student Development, Counseling, Public Health, Social Work or a related degree is required.
- Qualified candidates will have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs or other related fields for which this position provides oversight including: Health, Counseling, Title IX, Public Health, Crisis or Behavioral Intervention or Student Conduct.
- Strong management and supervisory skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple, competing priorities; strong analytical skills and excellent communication skills are required.
- Possess the ability to respond to and manage student crises.
- Highest standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior; ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Strong commitment to, and understanding of, working with a diverse student population and as part of an inclusive campus environment.
- Understanding of college student development and critical issues facing college students
- Strong management and supervisory experience.

- Doctorate in Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or a terminal degree in a related field (e.g., MSW, JD) is highly desirable.
- Previous experience directing or supervising student conduct and community standards and possessing knowledge of and experience in Title IX is extremely desirable.
- Active participation in professional associations.
- Experience working with high achieving students.
