NATURE OF WORK:
The application deadline for this position is March 31, 2017 and the anticipated start date is May 1, 2017. This is a responsible support position, which involves considerable exercise of initiative and reports to the Director of the Center for African Studies. The primary task is to assist the Director of the Center in fulfilling the goals and activities of the Center. This position requires extensive contact with staff, faculty, students and the public, and work is done with considerable independence within established policies and guidelines. An interest or background in African Studies is highly desired, but not required.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Assists in the management of the Center's budget; prepares detailed budget reports on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis; audits current procedures to monitor and improve efficiency of operations.
Assists the Director with the day-to-day management of the Center; reconciles p-card statements, report of business expense forms, etc.
Recruits students for the AFST minor/major as well as AFST programs such as Maymester Ghana.
Serves as an advisor to students pursuing the major/minor.
Ensures timely and accurate student registration; assists with graduation preparation; collects student data and prepares reports as needed.
Schedules meetings and events as needed.
Manages the Center's web pages and social media accounts including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
Represents the Center at various University functions including: Freshman Orientation, Transfer Student Orientation, High School Visitation Days, etc.
Collects and maintains semester course offerings and syllabi.
Assists in the planning and execution of yearly programming (Mandela Washington Fellowship, Walk To Remember, Africa Week, etc).
Performs related duties as assigned by the Director.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
The successful candidate will have earned a high school diploma from an accredited institution, and 1-3 years of progressively responsible and related support experience. Some business school training and/or an Associate's degree in business or closely related field of study and prior academic support experience is preferred and highly desirable, or any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer service orientation
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to be attentive to the details
Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed in order to attend Center events
Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in using the current Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access; willingness to learn new technologies relevant to the position; Ingeniux or related web page editing software knowledge is preferred
Knowledge of Accounting/Finance, Human Resources, Purchasing, and Payroll systems, preferably Banner
Enthusiastically seeks out work and new assignments; shows interest and initiative in taking on new and challenging assignments
Good problem-solving skills with a can-do approach
Ability to work independently on complex and confidential issues related to the day-to-day operations of the Center
Ability to initiate and follow through with work responsibilities and to meet deadlines
