Summary of functions
Reporting to the dean of undergraduate students, the senior associate dean is primarily responsible for systemic oversight and day-to-day management of the undergraduate disciplinary system and for leading the office's efforts to educate students about community standards of conduct. The senior associate dean bears ultimate responsibility for the management and disposition of approximately 350 cases per year, including violations by undergraduates of academic integrity regulations, the alcohol policy, assault, theft, and other interpersonal misconduct, working closely with faculty and other staff to gather relevant information, prepare cases and ensure adherence to all applicable policies and procedures. The senior associate dean serves as one of the panelists who investigate and adjudicate alleged acts by undergraduate students prohibited by Title IX of the Education Amendments of the 1972 Civil Rights Act, including discrimination on the basis of gender (sex), sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking, in accordance with the University's compliance obligations under Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization of 2012 (VAWA). As secretary to the Faculty-Student Committee on Discipline (COD) and co-chair of the Residential College Disciplinary Board (RCDB), the senior associate dean oversees first responses to reports of student misconduct, coordinates resources, accommodations, and information, conducts and oversees investigations, coordinates academic and behavioral cases, and trains investigators and adjudicators. As liaison between the University administration and the student-run Honor Committee, the senior associate dean serves as advisor to the Committee, providing guidance and advice to the student chair and to investigators regarding the intake, investigation, adjudication, and recording of alleged violations within the University Honor System. The senior associate dean is also available to members of the Honor Committee for consultation on issues involving policies and procedures.
The senior associate dean is responsible for hiring, supervising, and undertaking regular performance appraisals of an assistant dean and the department's technical support analyst/manager. In conjunction with another associate dean, the senior associate dean also manages and oversees the disciplinary work of six directors of student life, hires, trains and oversees the undergraduate investigations of the University Investigator, and is available to the associate and assistant deans of the Graduate School for consultation regarding graduate student cases. The senior associate dean shares responsibility with another associate dean and the manager of administration in ODUS for hiring, supervising, and undertaking regular performance appraisals of a dean's assistant.
The senior associate dean is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and archiving of permanent student disciplinary records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and University confidentiality and privacy policies. The senior associate dean is responsible for creating and maintaining policies and protocols to ensure compliance by the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
The senior associate dean serves as the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Student's liaison to the Department of Public Safety, the Office of General Counsel, and the office of the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity (Title IX Coordinator), and has significant contact with the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School, the Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education (SHARE) Office, the Registrar's Office, the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, the Office of Information Technology, and the Department of Athletics.
As a member of the dean's senior staff, the senior associate dean shares with other staff members responsibility for the development of policies regarding undergraduate life and is asked to assist the dean of undergraduate students with special projects, assignments, and committee work. The senior associate dean serves as first back-up in the management of undergraduate emergencies and crises, and serves in the emergency on-call rotation.

Education and experience requirements
The position requires an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline, J.D. preferred, and at least eight years of relevant professional experience. Experience working with student issues in a university setting is required. Demonstrated experience conducting investigations and adjudications of student conduct matters. Knowledge of and experience with issues related to academic integrity, community standards in higher education, alcohol and other drugs, sex discrimination including sexual misconduct and gender based violence.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- An understanding of and commitment to the aims of a liberal arts education;
- Demonstrated knowledge of current state and federal law and regulations related to student conduct, including FERPA, the Clery Act, Title IX, and VAWA is required;
- Excellent written communication skills;
- Knowledge of compliance for educational institutions receiving federal assistance;
- Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex caseload of alleged student misconduct;
- Excellent judgment, personal maturity, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain a neutral party; ability to be diplomatic and communicate difficult news with tact and compassion;
- Effective project management, organization and analytical skills;
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of constituencies;
- Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills;
- The ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information;
- Ability to build relationships and establish collaborative partnerships across departments at the university and among colleagues at peer institutions;
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity;
- Maintenance of professional qualifications through on-going training and professional development.
