We are looking for an enthusiastic teacher to join the Science Department, who feels competent to teach a Conceptual Physics course, based on the book by Paul Hewitt. This is a course designed for students who want a good foundation knowledge of Physics, who can if they wish, go on to take further courses in Physics if they want to, at AP or IB level. Conceptual Physics is taught with the emphasis of understanding and being able to describe the concepts of Physics, rather than problem-solving by the traditional mathematical approach. A teacher with a strong Science background is essential and has good mathematical capability, preferably in Physics; or feels confident if they are a Chemist or Biologist to teach a Physics course to Upper School students who are usually sophomores and juniors (Grades 10 and 11). They will also be required to teach one section of Science International to Upper School students (grades 9, 10 or 11). This course teaches aspects of Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science to EAL students, who are not quite ready to access a full Science course through the medium and competent use of English. Science International enables EAL students to develop their scientific vocabulary and understanding of Science improving their English, so that after doing this course they are ready to access the AP or IB programmes of study, with greater competent and confident use of English. Having knowledge of TOEFL or working previously with EAL students would be advantageous, though is not essential. Guidance will be offered by the International section of the school and previous Science International teacher. The teacher should feel confident in enabling EAL students to progress in their understanding of Science and be able to communicate effectively using English by the end of the course, so that they are ready to access future AP or IB courses of study. Other teaching duties include an advisory/pastoral role for a group of around 7 students and one study hall or lunchtime safeguarding duty, and 2 afternoons on after school extra-curricular activities. Having taught AP Sciences or IB Sciences is also useful, though is not essential.
Minimum of a BA degree. Teaching experience
