The Horace H. Rackham Graduate School is the home of graduate education at the University of Michigan. The Rackham Graduate School is seeking a highly motivated individual to provide the highest level of excellence and professionalism to assist with the strategic development of mutually beneficial partnerships between the University of Michigan and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in an effort to attract, recruit and retain a highly qualified, diverse graduate student community, including students of color and women.
The Assistant Program Manager will coordinate a university-wide assessment of current MSI partnerships; assist in the development of a strategic plan for building on those partnerships and developing new agreements; develop program content; advance and administer programs, events and other related activities; research and write printed materials and web site content; create and monitor program evaluations; assist in budget preparation and manage expenditures; prepare reports; and maintain program documentation and files.
They will be responsible for developing strong partnerships with faculty, staff and graduate students in graduate programs and departments in the schools and colleges across the University of Michigan as well as at other Minority Serving Institutions to inform and support successful recruitment programs that are mutually beneficial.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Programming and Coordination: Lead and/or assist with the development and implementation of MSI partnership building activities. Develop a series of university-wide conversations focused on educating our community on what is an MSI and best practices on how to create meaningful, purposeful and mutually beneficial relationships with MSIs. Identify meaningful ways to recruit, matriculate, and better integrate students from MSIs into graduate and professional educational programs across the University of Michigan. Plan, develop, administer, monitor and manage the expansion of the current Rackham recruitment grants program to include strategic relationship building with MSIs. Limited travel to partner institutions may be required.
Liaison: Serve as the primary contact for all current and future MSI institutional partners. Serve as key contact for all internal U-M departments and colleges regarding all MSI partnerships. Develop an organizational communication strategy to focus and support relationship building activities and efforts.
Institutional Assessment and Evaluation: In collaboration with Rackham Institutional Research team, review application and enrollment data to identify Minority Serving Institution (MSI) feeder schools for both Rackham and non-Rackham programs. Interview and survey U-M graduate programs/faculty/staff and other institutional leaders to identify existing partnerships with MSIs. In collaboration with Rackham’s Institutional Research Office, develop, monitor, and evaluate MSI partnerships efforts. Assist with the communication of successes and innovations resulting from our partnerships to key U-M constituents, the broader U-M community and at national level.
Facilitate Strategic Planning: In collaboration with Rackham leadership, develop a strategic plan for achieving the specific goals and objectives as it pertains to achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion among our graduate student population as outlined by institutional leadership. Facilitate meetings with institutional leaders at U-M and our partner MSIs to create meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with MSIs.
Resource Development and Maintenance: Lead efforts to benchmark activities at peer institutions that support and enhance meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with MISs. Develop website and resource list for highlighting these promising practices.
Establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with the Rackham Leadership and other members of the Rackham and University community. Represent the Graduate School as appropriate on University committee and project groups, providing liaison and support as needed.
Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education plus 3-5 years’ of responsible experience in higher education required. Experience implementing meaningful and mutually beneficial institutional partnerships and innovative student recruiting, activities and services. Experience developing and implementing workshops and conferences on a university campus and coordinating large scale events. Reasonable, increasingly responsible experience as a successful member of a high-level support team in recruitment, program development, management and coordination in a university setting, including staff work, program planning and administration. Understanding, appreciation of, and strong personal commitment to the issues involved in diversity, inclusion, and equity programming for students. Demonstrated customer service attitude and experience and excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential, including the capacity to build collegial relationships with faculty, staff and institutional leaders across the University and at other institutions. Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people who represent our diverse and multi-cultural society. Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of initiative, creativity and judgment and to achieve organizational and operational change within a large and complex organization with multiple operations and constituencies. Strong problem-solving skills, including the demonstrated ability to synthesize ideas, anticipate next steps, and prioritize important decisions. Demonstrated organizational skills to plan, organize, manage and follow through on a large and diverse workload with excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner. Ability to work well under pressure, with proven time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment and to organize complex information. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff within and external to the University external, both orally and in writing, including the ability to exercise discretion and judgment in matters of a sensitive or confidential nature. Ability to collect, analyze, and share data via various mediums and to summarize talking points. Understanding and value of diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization. Ability to demonstrate awareness and understanding of multiple facets of diversity: cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, gender, educational, age, sexual orientation, linguistic, professional, and other differences that make us unique. Passion for the mission/vison/goals of the University’s and Rackham’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative and the realization of the positive impact they can have in engaging leaders in a high performance culture. High level of proficiency of personal computer productivity tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google tools, and other web-based tools.
Ph.D. in higher education or other field highly desired. Prior student attendance or work experience in a Minority Serving Institution. Experience implementing initiatives that require organizational/cultural change. Extensive knowledge of graduate education, university organizational structures and higher education. Familiarity with a wide range of social media communications (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and digital collaboration tools.
