Mark Day School (est. 1980) seeks a collaborative, experienced, and innovative educator with a passion for teaching middle school English and history, implementing community engagement and partnership projects, and supporting student growth in a 21st century, middle-school context.
This full-time role is composed of three opportunities, explained below following the description of Mark Day School:
- Teaching one section of 8th grade English and one section of 7th grade history
- Supporting the Director of Cross-Cultural Partnerships and Community Engagement with program implementation and activities
- Serving as a student mentor in our 7th and 8th grade mentor program

Founded in 1980, Mark Day School is an independent, co-educational K-8 school located in the Bay Area in San Rafael, CA, with an enrollment of 380 students. The upper division (grades 7 & 8) of Mark Day School is a community of 88 middle school students characterized by academic excellence, innovative teaching methods, close collaboration between colleagues, a block schedule, a 1:1 laptop program and a balanced pedagogical approach. Teachers nurture, engage and challenge all learners by mixing traditional best practices with progressive, student-centered approaches such as project-based learning, student-centered inquiry and inclusive discussion formats that are responsive to the developmental stages of adolescent learners. Mark Day School's current strategic plan (available on our school website) also calls for the integration and development of our four cross-disciplinary literacies throughout a student's experience: social/emotional literacy, media and information literacy, global and cross-cultural literacy, and ecological literacy.
English and History at Mark Day School
Skills, understandings and attitudes developed throughout seventh and eighth grade English and history include broad metacognitive skills, such as growth mindset, self-advocacy, time management and collaboration, alongside specific content knowledge, understandings and skills associated with English and history. English students critically engage with a wide variety of texts including whole class novels, small group novels and independently selected works. They develop effective and powerful written communication, including analytical, narrative and creative writing. They also build public speaking and group discussion skills. History students learn key information and concepts, develop and apply research skills, think critically, use evidence to support claims, and communicate through a variety of media. They also learn to engage as active citizens and explore history with a eye towards social justice. This role will involve collaborating with current history and English faculty toward common learning objectives. A successful candidate should have a minimum of two years teaching experience with middle school students in these subject areas.
Cross-Cultural Partnerships and Community Engagement
Students throughout the school build cross-cultural skills and awareness through their participation in a wide range of programs, activities, and long-established partnerships with local organizations and international schools. Students are challenged to reach beyond their own experience and develop habits that both promote personal growth and contribute to the common good. Students develop skills in communicating and working with people from many backgrounds. At the heart of our partnerships lies the idea of reciprocity--everyone involved has something to learn and something to teach, something to give and something to receive.
Each upper division division teacher is also a student mentor and serves as the academic, social and emotional advisor to a group of eight seventh and eighth grade students. Mentor groups meet briefly each morning for check-in and announcements and twice a week for more in-depth discussions and activities. The mentor is the primary person with whom each student forms a close bond.
Duties & Responsibilities
- English/History Teacher & Mentor
- Teach one section of 8th grade English (22 students) and one section of 7th grade history (22 students) and collaborate with existing English and history faculty toward common learning objectives.
- Demonstrate academic and multicultural competency in classroom pedagogy, including innovative teaching as well as recognizing and responding to various learning profiles.
- Set high academic and behavioral expectations while maintaining a climate of responsibility, safety, enthusiasm, and fun.
- Form supportive and responsive relationships with students and families.
- Build a strong, positive classroom community in which students advocate for themselves and others.
- Provide constructive, timely feedback that fosters a growth mindset.
- Use available technology to enhance student learning, faculty collaboration and responsive communication. Technologies include: Mac laptops, Google Apps (mail, calendar and Google Classroom), SMART boards, various presentation software and online learning management systems for assigning homework and providing feedback.
- Chaperone on either the fall 7th grade trip to the Yosemite backcountry or the spring 8th grade trip rafting in the southwest.
- Complete recommendation forms for 8th graders applying to independent high schools.
- Participate in committee work related to community-wide school initiatives and attend regular team meetings as applicable.
- Community Engagement Associate
- Support programs, activities, and events organized by the Office of Cross-Cultural Partnerships and Community Engagement.
- Support the Director of Cross-Cultural Partnerships and Community Engagement to strengthen relationships with the school’s local and global partners.
- Work with faculty to develop and execute their community engagement and Cross-Cultural Partnerships projects.
- Actively participate in faculty- and student-driven diversity and inclusivity initiatives.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
- Relevant teaching experience with a minimum of two years preferred
- Proven cultural competence in a community committed to issues of diversity, equity and social justice.
- Strong skills with initiative, follow through, organization, collaboration and communication.
- Experience managing projects with significant logistics and multiple stakeholders
