The Department Head (DH) for Research Centers (RC) has the following responsibilities: to provide dynamic vision and leadership; lead, coordinate, and administer the RC’s research and outreach programs; foster a department culture that is participatory, cohesive, innovative, and unique to the region/nation and supports faculty/superintendent and staff excellence; recruit personnel, manage budgets, evaluate performance (annual, retention, promotion/tenure); participate in development activities; promote professional development activities and represent the faculty in various capacities on- and off-campus; provide leadership and advocacy for the Department of Research Centers; work collaboratively with the faculty and staff to develop missions, long-range plans and consistent policies and procedures; encourage and assist individual, multidisciplinary, multi-state, and multi-institutional research activities to leverage resources; dynamically support faculty in the pursuit of extramural funding from State, regional, National and private sources; enhance communications with faculty, local citizen/community advisory committees, and interested groups; serve as the primary communication link between Research Center personnel and on-campus administrative units; be a resource for University, College and Departmental policies regarding personnel, property and budget; travel on behalf of MAES would be required with regular visits to each Research Center; other related duties as assigned. The position is located in the College of Agriculture/Montana Agricultural Experiment Station in Bozeman and reports directly to the COA/MAES VP, Dean and Director.

Required: 1) Tenured associate or full professor with a terminal degree in a relevant agriculture discipline. 2) Experience working with or for a State Agricultural Experiment Station and off-campus centers. 3) Record of progressively responsible leadership experience. 4) Record of successful scholarly productivity and receipt of external funds. Preferred: 1) Knowledge of and experience with diverse agricultural science and natural resources research programs. 2) Demonstrated commitment to shared governance with faculty, staff, students, and administrators. 3) Experience in comprehensive communication and outreach efforts. 4) Record of successfully recruiting, mentoring, motivating and retaining faculty and staff. 5) Strong problem-solving abilities and team-building skills. 6) Demonstrated ability to work with and engage diverse students, staff, and colleagues within and outside the department and a commitment to the principles of inclusiveness and diversity.
