| Job Summary: Michigan State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School. The Associate Provost and Dean is the chief advocate for the University's graduate programs, providing vision and leadership in all aspects of research, teaching, and service related to graduate study. The Associate Provost and Dean oversees the quality of graduate programs and university policies and processes involving graduate programs, recruitment and admissions. The Associate Provost and Dean responsibilities also include facilitation of interdisciplinary graduate programs, management and allocation of University-level and endowment graduate fellowship funds, and oversight of the Teaching Assistant Program, the Office for Postdoctoral Training, PhD Career Services, the Office of Graduate Student Life and Wellness, and publication of The Graduate Post newsletter. The Associate Provost and Dean represents the University in a number of national and regional organizations, including the AAU Association of Graduate Schools, the Council of Graduate Schools, the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools, and the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School reports jointly to the Provost and to the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, and is expected to maintain strong relationships with college deans and graduate associate/assistant deans and to work closely with the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Associate Provost for Teaching, Learning, and Technology on academic initiatives affecting the quality of graduate and undergraduate teaching and learning. The Associate Provost and Dean also works with University Scholarship and Fellowships on fund-raising for graduate fellowships. As a comprehensive AAU, land-grant university, MSU enrolls more than 50,000 students with more than 11,500 enrolled in graduate and professional programs. MSU offers masters and doctoral degree programs in 200 major fields, with many opportunities for interdisciplinary study. The tenure system faculty numbers approximately 2,000.The Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School is a member of the Council of Deans and of the University Council, and serves as an ex-officio member of the University Committee for Graduate Studies. Working collaboratively with the deans of the colleges, the Associate Provost and Dean serves as their advocate on matters of common interest. In concert with the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, the Associate Provost and Dean contributes to maintaining cooperative relationships with state and federal agencies, and with foundations and corporate organizations which may provide sponsorship for graduate programs. In addition, the Associate Provost and Dean is expected to lead the Graduate School in applying for appropriate external grants that support graduate education at MSU, as well as being active in development activities to garner philanthropic support for graduate education. The Associate Provost and Dean works with the Council of Graduate Students (COGS), and, where appropriate, with the Graduate Employees Union (GEU). Finally, the Associate Provost and Dean functions as a member of the Provost's Leadership team.|
Minimum Requirements: - Current appointment as a tenured (full) professor in a department, school or non-departmentally organized college of Michigan State University with a record of strong teaching and scholarship.- A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.- A strong record of commitment to academic excellence and to high academic standards.- Considerable experience with graduate education, curriculum, programs and policy.- Experience with academic governance.- Experience at the national and/or international level in issues of graduate education. - Strong academic administrative experience, including a record of commitment to recruiting and supporting under-represented constituencies.- Strong leadership with vision, commitment, and skills to strengthen graduate programsin the years ahead in particular, the capacity and will to drive change.- Interest in assisting others in graduate instruction, including experience in working with graduate students.- Experience with professional and other organizations related to graduate education.- Effectiveness with faculty, students, staff, alumni, and groups inside and outside the University.- Interest in fostering multidisciplinary research and education.- Commitment to scholarship and publications relative to graduate education.- Capacity to define and communicate the mission of an AAU, land grant university in graduate education to both internal and external audiences, as well as potential donors.
