GMA, the trade association of food, beverage and consumer product companies, is currently seeking candidates for Director, Media Relations to join our growing Strategic Communications department.
Our new Media Relations Director will promote GMA initiatives, activities and public policy positions with media outlets – working to obtain placements in television and radio news programs, newspapers, magazines and blogs, and engaging with media to inform and push back on inaccurate/incomplete coverage. You will utilize social media platforms to engage reporters and work in concert with colleagues in other functional areas to develop and execute innovative campaigns that address the industry’s most important issues.
The Director, Media Relations will:
--Pitch and promote GMA initiatives, activities and public policy positions through relationships with media outlets.
--Protect GMA’s reputation and push back against inaccurate or incomplete stories.
--Develop and contribute to creation of communication strategies and targeted campaigns on key issues and initiatives.
--Develop materials such as talking points, press releases, media alerts, and pitches for both breaking news situations and long-lead stories.
--Prepare briefing documents and work with GMA leadership/spokespersons in preparation for media or public speaking engagements.
--Serve as an “On the Record” spokesperson in print and broadcast interviews as needed.
--Support and improve core communications responsibilities and processes for handling media calls, maintaining media lists, identifying event opportunities, updating master talking points, rapid response procedures and member communication protocols.
--Lead and manage all communications strategy and efforts for the food waste, product code dating initiative, and sustainability work of GMA including serving as the key media contact and spokesperson for GMA and the Food Waste Reduction Alliance.
