To prepare for and handle funeral services at the cemetery and to do limited grounds maintenance and cemetery beautification.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sets up and attends funeral services and take remains to grave, crypt or niche for final disposition.- Operates tractor/backhoe to open and close grave during interment procedure. Operates casket scissor lift during entombment. Based on knowledge of Cemetery procedures and safe operation of the equipment digs graves, prepares site, crypt, and niches. Ensures safe operation at all times. May be required to train others to operate equipment.- Inspects, maintains and repairs sprinkler equipment. Troubleshoots, programs and repairs sprinkler systems and controllers. Maintains tools and equipment needed for work. Cleans and rebuilds irrigation parts such as heads, valves and fittings. Estimates costs for repairs, makes recommendations on selection, ordering and storage of supplies and equipment. Refers to blueprints and plans developed by others. Operates ground equipment such as tractor, trencher, sweeper, boring machine, sod cutter and related equipment. Trims around sprinkler heads and valve boxes.- Based on knowledge of cemetery procedures sets memorial stones. May perform light maintenance such as simple painting, replacing washers, oiling equipment. Installs, repairs, and cleans concrete, above ground vaults, curbs, and grave copings. Performs concrete forming, pouring and finishing.- Prepares graves to have sod installed and installs sod.- Maintains all necessary equipment and tools in a clean and operational condition.- Sets up equipment such as chairs, flowers, etc. for funerals and cleans up after funerals.- Attend funeral service and transport casket to burial or crypt location and urn to burial or niche location.- Use hand tools as necessary to dig and to finish the digging of graves. Assists in all phases of burial and other cemetery duties.- Operates and uses a variety of hand, power and machine tools, as required in completing tasks, such as vacuums, casket transport, lowering device, mausoleum lift and motor vehicles.- Works under the supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, who assigns work, provides detailed instructions for new tasks, and general instructions on routine tasks. Established operating procedures apply in most cases.- Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public.- Interact tactfully and courteously with the public to answer policy and procedural questions related to cemetery operations, interment, and related services.- Remain composed and maintain a professional demeanor while working with grieving families.- Work in a team based environment and achieve common goals.- Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines.- Organize and coordinate a variety of details to ensure services are properly and accurately scheduled and complete.

Works under the supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, who assigns work, provides detailed instructions for new tasks, and general instructions on routine tasks. Established operating procedures apply in most cases.

- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in limited grounds maintenance and cemetery beautification.
- Two years experience in Cemetery maintenance and operations- Two years tractor/backhoe experience and ability to operate equipment safely in all types of weather conditions preferred.
- Ability to communicate and assist clients at funeral services.- Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English required.- Ability to operate scissor lift and complete entombment duties at heights of up to 15 feet.
Education and/or Experience:
Two years experience in Cemetery maintenance operations required.Valid California Drivers license required.Two years tractor/backhoe experience and ability to operate equipment safely in all types of weather conditions preferred
Salary Information: $29.06 per hour

This position is included in the Cemetery bargaining unit. Union membership is a condition of employment.This positions is a part-time position, working Saturdays from 8:00 am 4:00 pm. Additional hours may be available.
