The Michael G. Foster School of Business Undergraduate Programs Office is seeking an Academic Counselor, Senior who will, perform a wide range of duties related to all phases of students'academic experience as a business major at the University of Washington. The academic counselor advises current business majors, students applying to the major (freshmen from high school, UW pre-majors and transfers). Administrative duties are part of the position as well: processing admission applications, project assignments and interfacing with faculty and staff across campus and at other educational institutions.
Individual and group advising of students via drop-in or appointments, via Skype, phone or email contact.
Advising students enrolled in Foster degree programs:
Discuss time-to-degree, graduation planning, option selection and registration as it relates to career objectives.
Counsel students experiencing academic or personal problems and make referrals to appropriate campus resources when necessary.
Document interactions with students via on-line record keeping system.
Assist students through the University administrative system.
Advising prospective students:
Meet with high school, UW pre-majors and transfer students to discuss the benefits of a Foster degree and the admission process (prerequisites, admission tests, deadlines).
Communicate competitive nature of program and strategize best approaches to enhance admission possibilities.
Counsel students on match between career objectives and Foster School opportunities as well as alternative educational options.
Conduct information sessions, new student orientations and workshops to groups from 10 to 75 participants. May include outreach to feed schools for presentation or college fairs.
Advising applicants denied to the Foster School by discussing strategy and alternate programs.
Serve as a liaison with an academic department within the Business School.
Evaluate applicants for admission to the Undergraduate Program.
Act as a resource for advising and student service colleagues across campus and other educational institutions in Washington State.
Other projects could include but are not limited to: satisfactory progress checks, maintaining data on enrolled students, student surveys, course equivalency evaluation, communicating with students via social media and publications, advising specialized populations (EOP, minors, early entrance) or final degree checks
Activities supporting the mission of Undergraduate Programs (advising, career, diversity, and student services):
Serve and participate on Foster and University committees as assigned or designated
Support Foster Undergraduate Programs events and participate fully in a fast-moving team environment where everyone is expected to roll-up her/his sleeves and contribute whenever possible.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs
