New Student Programs at Virginia Tech enhances the student experience by fostering an inclusive, supportive, and learning-centered environment. Along with the new student programs team, the assistant director is critical to the development and implementation of purposeful and learning-centered programs and services. The assistant director reports to the director and works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to manage the details and logistics of student orientation sessions. This includes first-year and transfer sessions, as well as working in collaboration with Summer Academy and International Student Orientation Program.
Additionally, the assistant director will adopt and practice the Principles of Community as fundamental to Virginia Tech's on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion and to create a dynamic community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Duties and Responsibilities
1.Directly assist with the coordination and implementation of comprehensive orientation programs for new undergraduate students.
2.Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate undergraduate student leaders (Orientation Leaders, Transfer Leaders and Orientation/Transfer Coordinators)
3.Create and provide leadership development for student leaders.
4.Serve as a department liaison to university community including the academic colleges, faculty, departments, and students.
5.Oversee the process for scheduling and confirming the attendance of new undergraduate students for all orientation programs.
6.Assist in producing publications and media presentations related to New Student Programs.
7.Provide oversight for Guidebook, social media, and other emerging technology.
8.Assist with the assessment and evaluation of office programs and services.
9.Prepare and maintain appropriate periodic/special operations reports and surveys.
10.Serve as an advocate for first year students, new transfer students, and students in transition.
11.Participate in, and contribute to, professional development/activities (including research, conferences, and publications)
12.Perform additional duties as assigned to support New Student Programs
1. Master's degree in student personnel, higher education or a related field and work experience in collegiate student affairs, student activities, orientation, transfer, and first year programming.
2. Demonstrated staff training and supervision/advising experience.
3. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism and the ability to work with a diverse group of constituents.
4. Demonstrated experience in Orientation program development and delivery.
5. Experience in designing and implementing programming or large-scale events.
1. Working knowledge of student learning and development theory and practice as well as the needs/issues of First year and Transfer students.
2. Demonstrated organizational, leadership, communication and public relations skills.
3. Experience designing and implementing formal assessment and evaluation processes.
4. Demonstrated capacity for organizing a wide range of diverse tasks efficiently and effectively.
5. Experience advising/supervising with ability to lead a staff of thirty to forty undergraduate students.
6. Experience establishing and maintaining effective, cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administrators participating in orientation.
