Equipment Technician II - Band B
CLASSE OPERATES WORLD CLASS FACILITIES AND CARRIES OUT RESEARCH DRIVEN BY CORNELL FACULTY IN THE FIELDS OF BEAM PHYSICS, PHOTON SCIENCE, PARTICLE AND ASTROPHYSICS IN ORDER TO EXPAND SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATE STUDENTS AND INSPIRE THE PUBLIC.
Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education (CLASSE) has an immediate opening for an Assistant Rigger. We are looking for an individual who welcomes challenging work and a chance to join a world class program at a distinguished research university. This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal based on project funding and individual performance.
This position will assist senior rigging staff by performing day-to-day equipment handling activities in a large accelerator research facility by moving research supplies, equipment, and research devices within and between buildings.
Under general supervision, the individual will disassemble, modify/repair, and reassemble electro-magnets, radiation shielding, and other research support components; will assist in the assembly, repair, replacement, and maintenance of complex laboratory equipment. The individual will set up and rearrange lab equipment and experimental furnishings, and assist other technicians, research specialists, scientists and faculty as needed.
Required qualifications include High School diploma, with 6 months to 1 year of vocational or trade school training, and at least 6 months, but less than 1 year, of experience in basic material handling and mechanics. The ideal candidate will have basic skills for mechanical maintenance, installation, and repair techniques, and in the use of standard hand/power tools, and basic machine shop and carpentry equipment, and be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and be able to work in confined, awkward spaces, heights, and outdoors under all weather conditions.
Preferred qualifications include valid driver's NYS license with clean record and advanced machine shop, fabrication and mechanical skills, experience in rigging techniques, and equipment operation, such as: fork trucks, tractors, large trucks, mobile cranes or skid-steers.
