Purpose of Position:
Directs, plans, coordinates and implements administrative and operational activities for the School of Social Work fundraising program, primarily through the coordination of major gift and leadership annual fund strategies. To develop, in conjunction with senior leadership of the school, new opportunities for philanthropic fundraising while stewarding current relationships. Serves as the key point person for the school for all philanthropic activities, goals, and programming.
Scope of Work: The Director of Development is the lead professional responsible for all fundraising and alumni engagement in the School of Social Work. He/she will develop a fundraising and engagement plan for an integrated campaign in collaboration with the degree-granting schools at VCU. The DOD will serve as the school’s expert on best practices for fundraising, volunteer management, and stewardship. S/he will work closely with the Dean and senior leadership of VCU in informational gift solicitations. The position reports to the Dean, and the development program is managed and evaluated by the Dean and the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations or his/her designee. Annual performance reviews will be based on written, mutually approved operating plans and metrics developed in partnership with the VP DAR office, and conducted jointly by the Dean and the VP DAR Office. The DOD will:
Organizing and implementing the school’s fundraising efforts, with a focus on major gift activity.
Manage a portfolio of approximately 75-125 of the school’s top prospects.
Design and measure annual and long-range fund raising plan tied to the strategic needs of the school.
Integrate the faculty, students and alumni into development act ivies where most appropriate and effective.
Coordinate and leverage fundraising activities with all other units at VCU.
Ensure the accurate documentation of solicitation plans and activities in the university’s prospect management system RADAR.
Supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate development support staff in order to assure consistency, quality, and quantity of work performed.
Collaborate with other external relations staff, including marketing and communications, in order to ensure coordination of information to stakeholders and friends of the School.
Develop, support, and evaluate campaign volunteer opportunities within the School, including recruitment and training of those volunteers.
Audit internal operations in order to develop standardized procedures in keeping with university policies.
Coordinate the composing, editing, and publishing of fundraising reports.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Organize and implement the school's fund raising and alumni engagement efforts, with a focus on major gift activity, emphasizing team work, accountability and donor-centric systems.
2.Coordinate all alumni and development activities to include the 100th anniversary events.
3. Provide staffing support and coordination for the Development Council.
4.Manage a portfolio of the school's top prospects.
5.Design, implement and measure annual and long-range fund raising plan tied to the strategic needs of the school.
6.Integrate SSW and its constituents into development activities where most appropriate and effective.
7.Coordinate and leverage fundraising activities with all other units at VCU.
8.Ensure the accurate documentation of all development and alumni relations activities in appropriate management systems.
9.Manage all aspects of donor relations related to SSW scholarship and endowed funds.
10.When applicable, supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate support staff who work with donors and alumni in order to assure consistency, quality, and quantity of work performed.
11.Serve as a team member of the VCU external relations staff, including alumni, public relations and communications, in order to ensure coordination of information to stakeholders and friends of the School.
12.Develop, support, and evaluate campaign volunteer opportunities within the school, including recruitment and training of those volunteers.
13.Audit and administer internal development operations in order to develop standardized procedures in keeping with university policies.
14.Coordinate the composing, editing, and publishing of fundraising reports, working closely with the Director of Communications.
15.Other duties as assigned.
Must possess an advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.

Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and close significant gifts, having a demonstrated track record of successful gift solicitations at the $10K and above levels and having been involved as the strategist for complex gifts involving a variety of gifting vehicles, including deferred giving
Experience working in a large, complex environment, preferably a university setting
Professional credibility and maturity required to engage and leverage senior administrative leadership, deans, faculty and volunteer leadership in building a successful campaign and organization
Interpersonal skills that are consistent with bringing out the best in a team effort
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Personal attributes that include honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, collaboration, follow through and commitment, attention to detail, organization, and self-confidence
Personal commitment to the fund raising industry as evidenced through a strong work ethic and high standards of best practice
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Minimum of 5 years of experience in increasingly more responsible roles in development
Ability to handle multiple, complex activities simultaneously
Ability to coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment
Demonstrated knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing philanthropy
