Under general supervision of the Chairman of Neurosurgery, the Nurse Practitioner functions as a provider of patient care in Neurosurgery and utilizes operational knowledge and expertise in providing primary and/or specialized health care services to brain tumor, cerebrovascular, and neuro-spine patients. Evaluates healthcare treatments for outpatient surgery patients coordinating with established surgical services. Participates in ongoing research and quality assurance studies. Functions as liaison to physicians, mid-levels, physical and occupational therapists. Position requires special knowledge, skills and abilities in the fields of neurosurgery and wound care.
A Master's Degree in Nursing.
State of California R.N. and N.P. License.
State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number.
Accredited NP Specialty Certification (AANP or ANCC).
BLS and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within 6 months of hire date.
Theoretical background in: anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.
Four (4) years experience in Neurosurgery.
Demonstrated experience in performing initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
Ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful manner.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.
Some weekend work may be required; overtime required as needed.
Work location is all sites within the UCSD Health System, including satellite locations. Must have access to reliable transportation.
Must have National Board Certification for Nurse Practitioners.
Must be able to obtain medical staff privileges.
Practice consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance.
