General Statement of Duties
Under general direction, the purpose of the classification is to provide professional library reference services to community college students, faculty, and staff. Employees in this classification perform specialized professional work involving library operations, library reference services, and library resource development/access. Classification is responsible for assisting in operating the library by providing reference services, developing/teaching bibliographic instruction and information literacy, and assisting researchers in use of print/electronic resources including online search services, CD-ROM's, Internet, and networked information resources. Also responsible for coordination of assigned staff. Performs related work as directed.
Provide excellent patron assistance at the Research Help Desk and Circulation Desk; Assist with collection development by selecting new materials for addition to the collection and following prescribed weeding guidelines to promote a balanced and timely collection; Assist with the acquisition, management, and delivery of library print and electronic serials and monographs; Assist with managing the print periodicals collection including receipt, check-in, organization and shelving of materials; Manage the interlibrary loan service; Receive and process requests for materials, maintain records and statistics and ensure copyright compliance; Utilize library reference/instruction tools such as LibGuides, LibChat, and database platform searching and maintain the Research Help Desk manual; Create guides, displays and online materials that support the goals of the department and the curriculum of the college; Promote eBooks, digital resources and mobile technologies; Assist with the library webpage; Assist with implementing and promoting programming for library services, events, and outreach initiatives including co-curricular programming and marketing; Assist with developing relationships with groups across campus and the surrounding communities; Gather and analyze Research Help Desk statistics to improve library service; Collaborate with colleagues to assist with library projects, processes and procedures; and Other duties and projects as assigned.
ALA accredited Master's degree in Library Science, Library & Information Science, or closely related field required; with three (3) years' experience and /or training that includes library operations, library information systems, reference services, bibliographic instruction, circulation services, and cataloging; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience (community college experience preferred). CW/MARS and/or Evergreen experience preferred. Enthusiastic public service orientation and commitment to providing user-centered services is essential. Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students. Strong communication and presentation skills are essential. Knowledge of instruction methodologies and information literacy principles preferred. Working knowledge of electronic databases, Internet resources, integrated library systems and reference tools. Must have basic personal computing skills and a willingness to learn new software programs. Familiarity with collection development principles or experience with faculty liaison programs. Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills exhibiting a high degree of flexibility and ability to work in a team environment. Ability to use initiative to further departmental or library-wide goals. Attention to detail a must. Willingness to cross-train is essential.
