UW Environmental Health and Safety Department (EH&S) partners with the rest of the University of Washington community to provide safe campuses and protect our environment. EH&S has an outstanding opportunity for a part time, 50%FTE Public Health Program Specialist. The EH&S Public Health Program Specialist will be in charge of inspecting food safety, drinking water safety, pest control, and pool and spa safety for all three UW campuses. The public health program specialist (PHPS) plays a key role in maintaining safe and healthy campuses for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by implementing the food safety program. The public health program specialist works closely with the public health program manager to develop and implement food safety program protocols. The public health program specialist inspects food safety at University food service establishments, large athletic events, temporary food events, and other campus events where food is served.
This position will directly contribute to and be accountable for creating and sustaining EH&S's culture of service, accountability, and excellence.
Inspect UW's food service providers on three campuses, including more than 200 retail food establishments, large temporary food events, two large hospital-based food services, and food concessions at athletic events
Collaborate with food service managers to improve compliance with food safety standards and mitigate risk for UW students, faculty, staff, and visitors
As needed, temporarily close food service establishments to reduce the risk of foodborne illness
Assist with foodborne illness investigations, potentially in collaboration with local, state, and federal food safety officials
Maintain paper and/or electronic records of food service inspections and temporary food permit applications
Provide culturally competent education, technical assistance, and regulatory compliance advice to campus food service establishments
Convey and interpret public health and environmental codes, regulations, policies, and technical regulatory information to a variety of diverse audiences
Determine if regulatory violations have occurred, document violations, and establish schedule for corrections; and make recommendations for follow-up to public health manager based upon investigation findings
Respond to public complaints and inquires on food borne illness and environmental health matters
Maintain and use program based computerized systems, write reports, and maintain accurate field records
Participate in assigned Environmental Health & Safety meetings and trainings

| Bachelor's degree in public health, environmental health, biological sciences, or a related field |
Demonstrated knowledge of food safety principles, or a strong interest in learning about food safety other aspects of environmental health and safety
Excellent oral communication skills, including the ability to be articulate, diplomatic, and customer service-oriented
Demonstrated written communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise and accurate correspondence and reports conveying professionalism and diplomacy
Demonstrated ability to use sound judgement while interacting with colleagues and clients
A collaborative, consultative approach to compliance adherence

Strong desire for ongoing technical and professional learning
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
