Middle School Personal Development Teacher
Part-time (.625 FTE)
Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, is currently recruiting for a middle school personal development teacher, starting late August 2017.
The aim of the Lakeside Middle School Personal Development Program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to live a healthy and rewarding life in middle school and beyond. To achieve this aim, our curriculum works to empower students to understand themselves, make intentional values-based decisions, practice healthy behaviors, and positively engage with others in their local and global communities. Points of emphasis in the curriculum are: identity, identity and community, healthy peer relationships, emotional health, brain development, puberty, and mindfulness.
Personal Development department members collaborate to engage students in content that is appropriate to the age, abilities, and needs of Lakeside students. Personal Development teachers work to create a safe and open classroom environment that encourages thoughtful reflection, skill building, and honest dialogue about sensitive and personal issues that are relevant to the adolescent experience.
This position reports to the Middle School Personal Development Department Head and will join a highly collaborative department. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
- Teach personal development, sections meet twice a week;
- Participate in the work of the personal development department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
- Serve as a co-advisor for a group of students and participate in grade level activities, such as service-learning, field trips, or outdoor trips;
- Provide academic support for students outside of class time as needed; and
- Attend department, grade level, and faculty meetings.
Requirements and Qualifications
Candidates should have teaching experience, preferably with students in middle school or early high school. In addition, they should have a strong understanding of and appreciation for adolescent social, physical, and emotional growth. A bachelor's degree is required. Computer (PC/Windows platform) proficiency is also necessary. References should address the candidate's ability to instruct successfully a wide range of students and to work with other adults in a high functioning, collaborative, and innovative educational setting. Candidates must satisfactorily complete a nationwide criminal background check and a Washington State Patrol background check.
