Mount Holyoke College seeks an Assistant Director for Analytics & Visualization to deliver timely, interactive, and actionable data visualizations, dashboards, and reports in support of the College's mission and strategic initiatives. This is a full-time, exempt, 12-month, benefit-eligible staff position. Review of applications will begin immediately, with an anticipated start date as soon as possible.
The Assistant Director for Analytics & Visualization will work in partnership with the Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness to blending large quantities of data from across the campus into visually-based system that includes descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics. The Assistant Director supports college-wide management and visualization of institutional data and will join an organization that values the use of data to make decisions. Responsibilities include developing, utilizing, and managing key databases to support the College’s operations as well as data visualization and reporting functions. The Assistant Director assists with data analysis, visualization, and reporting related to institutional effectiveness, responds to ad hoc research requests, analyzes and presents survey results, assists in the preparation of standard government and accreditation reports (IPEDS, NEASC, etc.), and contributes to the further development and maintenance of key visualizations for enrollment management, institutional performance indicators, alumni outcomes, and the IR website.
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Skills)
- Successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to visualize data into interactive tables and charts (preferably using one of the following Tableau, R or Shiny, Java Query, etc.)
- A bachelor’s degree is required, a graduate degree in computer science, educational policy, social science research or another quantitative field is preferred.
- The successful candidate should be a motivated and creative professional preferably with two years’ experience in institutional research or closely related field in a college or university setting
- Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously with attention to timelines.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and interact professionally with a variety of audiences.
- Strong EXCEL skills, including charts, formulas, and pivot tables. Strong skills with other PC applications such as MS Word and MS PowerPoint to summarize and present data.
- Experience in summarizing data using SPSS (or comparable statistical software) and creating attractive and effective presentations, including tables and charts, for multiple audiences.
- Familiarity with survey design, SAP Business Objects, Ellucian Colleague, and Tableau.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and security procedures regarding the use and storage of confidential data.
- Ability to work collaboratively to prioritize and coordinate major data initiates with other divisions on campus.
- Strong data synthesis & visualization skills
- Ability to work with data-mining or predictive modeling software (e.g., Knime, Rapid Insight, SPSS modeler etc.).
Essential Job Functions
Reporting and Analysis
- Visualize key strategic metrics and goals.
- Develop creative ways to display data.
- Assist Assistant Director of Assessment with survey analysis and visualization
- Visualize national student clearinghouse data for student recruitment, student retention, and alumni outcomes research
- Visualize research and analyses of student learning though local and national survey tools (e.g., CIRP, NSSE)
- Work with the Assistant Director of Assessment to produce data to support college-wide compliance with external reporting mandates and public disclosure, including requests from over 70 external entities including IPEDS, US News and World Report, Princeton Review, financial institutions, and accreditation agencies.
- Assist campus offices with internal reporting by understanding their reporting needs and identifying appropriate data sources (Enrollment Report, Entering Class Characteristics, law school statistics, Student Persistence tracking by term, Graduation Rates by cohort, etc.).
- Develop and conduct research studies to support institutional priorities. Refine research questions; determine appropriate statistical analyses of data; summarize research findings; and write reports with concise, relevant, clear, and accurate data.
- Design and maintain databases to support the College’s operations and institutional research priorities, including but not limited to enrollment management, academic assessment, strategic planning, accreditation, and grant applications.
- Manage the processes around the design and implementation of ad-hoc and automated reports using reporting tools or programming languages that support business intelligence in a variety of functions including admissions, enrollment, and instructional and student survey data.
- Collaborate and with the Director on efforts concerning the development of policies and procedures surrounding data governance and data sharing
- Work with Library and Information Technology staff and campus information managers to maintain policies and practices to ensure data integrity, facilitate the integration of information systems that serve campus-wide analytic and reporting needs, and provide appropriate access to institutional information.
Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence
- Assist in the College’s transition to a College-wide data warehouse and the resultant changes in protocol for data maintenance, in collaboration with staff members from the Library and Information Technology department.
- Support delivery of a daily enrollment management dashboard of key admissions and financial aid data.
- Manage the College dashboard of key strategic indicators. Continually monitor the dashboard to ensure alignment with college priorities and strategic indicators.
- Design “universes” or “views” for the College’s suite of student and alumnae surveys in the data warehouse and test their functionality.
- Develop and distribute reports using SAP Business Objects, the College’s business intelligence tool.
- Participate in the development of the College’s Business Objects Users’ Group, in collaboration with the Library and Information Technology department.
- Stay abreast of current trends and best practices in data visualization, by participating in the Five College Tableau Users’ Group.
- Collaborate with the Information Technology team to share information on appropriate tools to meet the business intelligence and data analysis needs of the College.
