The 5th-8th Grade Learning Specialist will be an active, integrated part of the K-8 learning specialist and academic team. S/he will partner closely with the K-5 Learning Specialist, and report directly to the Middle School Director. In addition to working closely with teachers, s/he will monitor the progress of students with identified learning differences, assist in developing learning plans, and oversee implementation of accommodations in 5th-8th grade classrooms. The 5th-8th Grade Learning Specialist will assist teachers, parents, and students in broadening their understanding of the learning process. Redwood Day believes strongly in universal design or access to curriculum and learning for all students. This includes, but is not limited to - addressing differentiation, development, and social/emotional growth. Direct services will include facilitating regular lunchtime/afterschool study centers and teaching study skills/learning strategies in the Middle School. The 5th-8th Grade Learning Specialist will consult with and coach teachers through collaborative meetings, attend student support meetings and conduct observations of individual students who are identified as requiring additional support. Also, this individual will lead/attend parent meetings with the Middle School Division Director, K-5 Learning Specialist, and/or Assistant Head of School as part of student-family partnership around learning support for individual students. As a teacher in the Middle School, this individual will also serve as an advisor, facilitate an elective activity, and participate in various student and community activities. Additional responsibilities include active involvement in collaborative teacher meetings, supervisory duties, and outdoor education.
This is a full-time position starting in August 2017.
- Experience in administering screenings and knowledge of psychometrics
- Experience in using technology for students with learning differences
- Training and experience working with upper elementary through 8th grade
- Demonstrated ability to effectively network and build relationships with various internal and external constituencies
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
