This position works in the University Honors Program (UHP). Honors Advisors work with high-ability undergraduate students to help design their academic programs and co-curricular Honors Experiences in order to help students challenge themselves, achieve their academic and personal goals, and expand their understanding of the complexity and interconnectedness of the world in which they live. Honors Advisors work collaboratively with faculty and colleagues across the University to provide strong advising support for UHP students.
Honors Advisors demonstrate high standards of professionalism and collegiality, and foster a supportive, positive work atmosphere that encourages the open expression of ideas. Self-motivation, attention to detail, strong communication skills, dependability, and excellent-problem solving skills are some of the professional qualities successful candidates must demonstrate. The Honors Advisor will serve as the primary contact and academic counselor for honors students earning undergraduate degrees in the College of Liberal Arts. Honors students’ career interests, post-graduate plans, and career goals will be particularly relevant discussion topics during advising appointments. The Honors Advisor must feel comfortable working with deadlines, managing ambiguity, and efficiently prioritizing tasks. Strong collaborative skills are essential, as is a commitment to accuracy. Starting salary range is $46,000–$54,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
65% - Advise Honors students on academic goals, personal development and post-undergraduate career and educational opportunities. Provide information, advocacy and support to honors students regarding eligibility and requirements for graduation with Latin Honors. Conduct orientation meetings and lead other presentations depending on professional expertise and interest. Meet individually with advisees throughout the calendar year, including first-year and sophomore students for pre-registration advising in fall and spring semesters and annual advising meetings for junior and seniors. Communicate with advisees via email and telephone. Enter PeopleSoft notes related to advising and other student documentation. Evaluate students' Honors Experience petitions and requests for exceptions to UHP policy.
Assist students in identifying resources for undergraduate research, learning abroad opportunities, civic engagement, and academic success support. Work with students experiencing academic challenges to help them create academic goals that will enable academic improvement. Counsel students on personal issues affecting academic performance as appropriate, and make referrals to other University and community resources for specialized assistance or counseling services when needed. Encourage qualified students to apply for appropriate departmental, college, national, and international scholarships.
15% - Attend UHP staff meetings and participate in UHP working groups, committees, and projects. Assist UHP leadership in planning and implementing UHP initiatives. Present UHP informational sessions to campus units and organizations. Conduct information sessions or workshops for students on study abroad, graduate school planning, research and scholarship opportunities and other topics.
10% - Serve as liaison with departments, colleges and other units as assigned. Attend meetings and serve on committees, update UHP Director and staff on developments in assigned college/unit, and promote the UHP mission with them. Communicate with departmental Honors faculty representatives on a yearly basis.
5% - Conduct periodic reviews of student progress, including a comprehensive review of all advisee records in the late summer to verify completion of Honors requirements and eligibility to continue in Honors. Compile statistics at the Director's request. Write letters of recommendation for students.
3% - Promote UHP and the U of M at Admissions Commitment Events, Sneak Preview Days and various other events.
2% - Participate in professional development and lifelong learning activities that contribute to the advising profession, Honors advising, and the intellectual life of the University and the community.
