The Veterans Affairs Specialist serves all military-affiliated students enrolled in or applying to the MBA and MAC programs in the administration and support of veterans education benefits. The total number of students across the MBA and MAC program deliveries is over 2,000, which includes a full-time residential MBA program serving 560 students, three part-time Executive MBA programs serving 300 students, an online MBA program serving 900 students, a full-time campus MAC program serving 125 students, and an online MAC program serving 130 students.
The Veterans Affairs Specialist will have direct contact with students as they navigate the educational benefit application and certification processes. This position will independently manage the VA certification process, which includes gathering required documentation, creating a file for each student, accessing the VAOnce electronic database and certifying enrollments, and tracking payments in conjunction with the UNC Cashier's Office. Based on our current student population, the Veterans Affairs Specialist should expect to process approximately 1,000 certifications annually. This position must collaborate with program registrars in monitoring enrollments to ensure any changes are reported to the VA within the allowable timeframe. The individual will implement processes and controls so that enrollment statuses, withdrawals, academic eligibility, and graduation actions are monitored and reported per federal requirements. The position will consult with the VA's Educational Liaison for more complex certification and eligibility questions performing follow-up actions as appropriate. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to interpret policies and procedures based on their knowledge of the different education benefits under the Veterans Administration.
The Veterans Affairs Specialist must be intimately familiar with all types of veterans educational benefits as well as the various MBA and MAC academic calendars and tuition rates. The position will act as the school expert with regard to interpreting policy and assuring that all record keeping requirements are met. The position will counsel current and prospective military-affiliated students by phone, email, virtual meetings, and in person to advise them of their benefit options and responsibilities. The position is expected to provide superlative customer service, maintain student confidentiality, perform quality control checks, and monitor work flow. Organization and the ability to pay close attention to detail is essential in order to ensure that all VA files are accurate and in compliance with established policies and procedures. Timely processing is necessary in order for the funds to arrive prior to the tuition due date. Working collaboratively across the various programs is critical to the success of the position.
The Veterans Affairs Specialist will serve as the staff advisor for the Military Veterans Association at UNC Kenan-Flagler and become a member of the university's Veterans Resource Committee. The Veteran Affairs Specialist will attend periodic live and virtual information sessions to share our VA benefits process with prospective students and answer questions as appropriate. The position resides in the Kenan-Flagler Business School and will work closely with financial aid, admissions, cashiers, and the registrar staff.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Must possess a professional demeanor with exceptional organizational, written and oral communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities while maintaining a high level of attention to detail. Highly motivated, demonstrates initiative, positive attitude, results-driven, and possesses the ability to work across programs with a broad range of internal and external constituents. Prior administrative experience, ideally in a university setting, is required.
Prior experience certifying veterans education benefits is preferred.
