Utica College, a small comprehensive college in Upstate New York, is seeking a Part-Time Campus Safety Officer - Sergeant to perform support functions for the Campus Safety Department under direction of and reporting to the Captain of Campus Safety. Duties include patrolling campus buildings, responding to emergencies and enforcing the laws of New York State and the policies of Utica College.

Primary responsibilities include:
Patrolling the campus by foot/vehicle to observe and report suspicious and/or criminal activities, responds to emergencies, documents all incidents and takes appropriate actions as necessary; Observes, reports and initiates corrective actions on safety or fire violations. Inspects fire extinguishers ensuring they are fully charged and properly located. Responds to fire alarms, ensures proper evacuation and initiates appropriate action (i.e. incident reports); Issues appropriate tickets for parking and moving violations; Assists students and staff as needed with room lockouts, escorts, information requests, access to academic areas, and vehicle problems, etc; Enforces the laws of New York State and the rules and policies of Utica College; Provides quality customer service (defined as friendly, courteous, respectful, and helpful) to students and all other members of the college community with whom there is contact, as well as when representing the college to external organizations or individuals; Provides direction to and supervision of Safety Officers assigned within his/her shift; Coordinates working schedule, training, and post assignments with the Captain; Inspects Safety Officers assigned to shift for proper hygiene, uniform appearance, and job knowledge at the beginning of shift; Takes an active role in the development of the department’s strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership. Works closely with department supervisor to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success; Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and departmental goals and key performance indicators; Flexibility to work a wide variety of shifts including day, late night/early morning hours, holidays, weekends, unexpected overtime and mandatory work assignments and meetings; Takes an active role in managing and updating Utica College’s Emergency Preparedness Plan; May perform other duties as assigned.
An Associate Degree, or equivalent working experience in a related field; Completion of the New York State Security Guard Training required; Certificate for completion of NIMS IS-100, and NIMS IS-700; Experience with Emergency Management programs preferred; 3 years Supervisory/Managerial experience preferred.
The Successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students, outside vendors, local law enforcement agencies, local fire agencies, and local emergency agencies; Hold a current NYS valid driver’s license is required; be familiar with hand tools, telephone and radio equipment, calculator, copier and a computer. Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions; Ability to maintain confidential information, exercise sound judgment and work independently; Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in stressful situations; Law enforcement or security experience is preferred but not necessary.
