The Director of Education & Community Engagement is responsible for the development and implementation of Overture Center programs that educate and engage the community in the arts. Work is creative and involves assessing community needs and artistic resources to create programs that further the mission of Overture Center and serve diverse interests and communities. Work involves considerable public contact with artists, traditional and non-traditional audiences and is characterized by attention to detail, independent judgment, coordination of multiple tasks, collaboration with others, and high standards of customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop, direct, and monitor programs that build audiences for the arts, deepening the public’s ability to understand and appreciate various art forms, and encouraging full utilization of Overture Center by traditional and non-traditional audiences; develop and nurture partnerships to enhance programming and assure that underserviced communities are being served; develop and monitor the education and community engagement budget and ensure that expenses are managed efficiently.
Review and evaluate programs and artists and recommend continuation, expansion, or deletion based on factors such as validity, relevance, quality, financial feasibility, and response to the organization’s goals and mission. Collect and assimilate ideas and models for improvement of current programs and development of new programs; research, develop, and implement new engagement activities and programs as they serve our mission and vision.
Work closely with marketing team on the development of marketing strategies and plans for each program, and on analysis of audience and other relevant data recommending and implementing marketing and engagement strategies and evaluations of programs based on the findings. Participate in marketing research in the performing arts field and in the Madison community.
Work closely with Director of Diversity & Inclusion to identify and coordinate opportunities that advance Overture education and community engagement programs to serve new constituencies; make a concentrated effort to employ staff and artists that reflect a diverse community. Participate with development team in the strategy and solicitation of funding for education and community engagement programs.
Provide leadership and oversight of education and community engagement personnel including guiding the staff in goal setting and performance review initiatives. Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate employees. Develop informational materials and training, and provide direction to improve methods and productivity of staff to accomplish objectives.
Serve as a member of the programming team. Actively participate in strategic planning, goal setting, budgeting, and reporting to ensure effective decisions regarding operations.
Serve as staff liaison to Overture’s Community Advisory Board. Work closely with the board to assure community programs are effective at engaging and educating the community in the arts.
Perform other duties including attending conferences, community and educational events, performances, and working outside traditional office hours as required to advance Overture’s artistic and programmatic goals.
