Wake Forest University (WFU), a top-30 nationally ranked university located in Winston-Salem, NC invites applications for the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering to begin in the fall semester of 2017. This newly approved department within the undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences at WFU is part of a larger cohort of programs in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering that will anchor the University’s undergraduate presence at Wake Forest Innovation Quarter in downtown (referred to as Wake Downtown (email@example.com)) in Winston-Salem beginning in 2017.
Wake Forest is establishing an Engineering Department with a primary motivation being innovation in the curriculum, learning methods, and liberal arts education, including a project-based curriculum that emphasizes creative design, entrepreneurship, and industrial, governmental, and community partnerships. To realize this goal, we seek enthusiastic applicants who hold degree(s) or have substantial experience relevant to our vision, have a desire to drive change in engineering education within a liberal arts university, and can bring a spirit of creativity and excitement to this unique opportunity.
The faculty member will be expected to teach introductory and advanced classes at the undergraduate level in engineering and senior design; establish a program of scholarship that will engage undergraduate students in meaningful scholarship within an engineering discipline; and serve the department and university through student advising, undergraduate mentoring, and establishing links to industrial partners. In addition, engineering faculty will teach introductory courses to non-majors, including first-year seminars on interdisciplinary topics connected to engineering.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an engineering or complementary discipline and be interested in contributing to an educational environment that emphasizes excellent engineering combined with creative design and entrepreneurship. The initial degree being offered is a BS in General Engineering with an optional concentration in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Biomaterials Science and Engineering. As we will seek ABET accreditation, faculty members at the higher ranks will be expected to spend considerable effort in curriculum and program design that takes advantage of a strong liberal arts environment. The successful candidate should have experience with curriculum development and assessment, and experience with ABET accreditation of an existing program is a strong plus for this position as the faculty member will be expected to work toward establishing assessments in line with ABET accreditation requirements.
Successful candidates will be appointed to a tenure track or tenured position in the new Engineering Department and will help establish the new undergraduate engineering programs that embrace Wake Forest's culture as a leading collegiate university in the US.
